Castiel Novak was an awkward teen that only few people understood. He was openly gay at school, as well as his best friend, Charlie, but they didn't let people bully them for it. Charlie was known for being a tough and highly sarcastic girl, and she was gradually influencing Castiel to be just like her.
Castiel got up for school one morning and followed his daily routine. He got on the bus and sat in his normal seat next to Charlie. The day seemed to be just like any other, but it would turn out to be a day Castiel will never forget.
Castiel stumbled off the bus and pulled his bookbag higher on his shoulder. He made sure Charlie was at his side, then entered the school. The school was crowded, as usual, but more people were whispering on the sidelines. He turned the direction of his gaze down the main hallway and noticed a tall boy with broad shoulders and a dark leather jacket loading books into his locker. "Who is that?" He whispered to Charlie as they stopped to look at him. "Oh, that's the new boy. Dean Winchester." Castiel couldn't believe how fascinated he was of this strange boy. He felt like he wanted to get to know him somehow, and he'd dedicate the rest of the school year to doing so.
Castiel got his books and entered first period. He sat next to Charlie and they began to talk about superheroes while they waited for the teacher. As Charlie was talking, Castiel noticed how she began speaking slower and her eyes were no longer on his, but looking behind him. He turned around to see Dean fiddling a pen between his fingers in the desk next to him. He flung himself around and flashed Charlie a nervous look. She just smirked in response.
Girls huddled around his desk, all there to ask him to the Halloween dance on Friday night. Charlie giggled at Castiel's sudden look of aggravation. "Do you like him?" She leaned over and whispered as the teacher walked in the classroom and shooed the girls to their seats. He shook his head. "Of course not," he began. "I don't even know him." Charlie smiled and raised an eyebrow. She knew him all too well.
At lunch, Charlie and Castiel met at their usual lunch table. They laughed and ate their food, but things changed quickly when Dean rushed over and sat next to Castiel. "Hey, I'm Dean and I'm having a slight problem." He said out of breath and quite swiftly. Castiel looked at Charlie with confusion and tried piece together what was going on. "I'm Castiel and this is Charlie. What's your problem?" Castiel replied, shaking his head. Dean took a minute to catch his breath and Castiel found himself staring at his lips. "These freaking girls keep chasing me," he started. "I don't know why or how to get them off me." Castiel chuckled and bit into his sandwich. "That's because you're attractive, and mysterious. They wanna go to the Halloween dance with you." Dean's eyes grew and his mouth slightly opened in amazement. Castiel would never admit to finding it adorable. "They think I'm attractive? Well sorry on their part but I haven't been with a girl in years." He laughed and Charlie nudged Castiel's side. "What?" He asked Dean.
By the end of lunch Castiel had learned so much about Dean, and had gotten a new nickname.
"So, Cas," Dean began. "Cas?" Castiel questioned. "No one has ever referred to me as that before," he smiled, "but I like it." Dean reciprocated the smile. "Good," he replied.
Charlie felt a little left out, but it didn't bother her. As much as he denied it, she knew Cas has a major crush on Dean. Plus, she was sorta excited about it because he just told Cas he was gay. She wished something like that happened to her once in a while. Though she wasn't complaining, she's had her eye on Dorothy Baum for years, and she came out as bisexual this year, so Charlie was planning on making a move.Days went by and Dean and Cas grew closer and closer. Charlie had herself a date to the dance, so she was spending time with her, and didn't mind Cas putting his full attention on Dean. They sat with each other everyday at lunch and in class, too. They talked and laughed and learned so much about each other in only four days. Today, Thursday, was the day before the dance. Everyone already had dates, but Cas wasn't planning on going anyway so he wasn't upset he was dateless. "So what're your plans for tomorrow?" Dean asked Cas as he set his tray on the lunch table. "I was gonna have a Star Wars marathon. Wanna join me?" Cas responded as he took a drink of his water. Dean cleared his throat. "I, um, actually wanted to know if you wanted to go to the dance. With me. Tomorrow night." He smiled weakly and his shimmering green eyes pierced into Cas's. Cas smiled sincerely and Dean's heart fluttered. "Of course I will." Dean's tense body relaxed at Cas' words and he smiled.
The night of the dance came and Dean showed up to Cas' house dressed as a night. He walked up to his door to pick him up and Cas answered before he could even knock. "Hey Cas. Are you an angel?" Dean asked, admiring Cas' white suit, small angel wings, and fake halo on his head. He nodded. "Indeed I am." Dean smiled in return and ushered him into his '67 Impala which Cas already knew everything about. "Wow. She's better than you described her as." Cas said, smoothing his hand across the dashboard of Dean's car. "You don't know how much that means to me." Dean replied with a fake crying voice, putting his hand over his heart. Cas giggled and Dean smiled at the sound of it.
They walked into the dance and couldn't believe the faces of all the girls who saw Dean walk in with Cas. It actually made Cas blush when he felt all the eyes on him. Dean grabbed his hand and ran over to Charlie and Dorothy. "Hey, guys!" Dean called over the sound of the loud music. Charlie turned around and smiled. "Hey! I see you two have gotten..well..closer" Dean laughed and put his arm around Cas. "I guess," he wearily replied. They said hi to Dorothy before Cas pulled Dean to the side. "Dean, are you sure you wanna, like, hold my hand and stuff? People are staring." Dean chuckled. "Good. I want them to see how much I like you. Now come on, let's actually have some fun." Dean ran off and Cas sighed.
Cas was surprised at how much he enjoyed himself at the dance. He thought he'd let the fact that he thought he was ruining Dean's life bother him the whole time but it surprisingly didn't. When it was time to go, they said goodbye to Charlie and Dorothy and got back into the car. When they pulled up in front of Cas' house, Dean stopped him before he got out. "Wait, Cas. Before you go...I want to tell you something." Cas sat back down and looked Dean right into his beautiful, emerald colored orbs. "The way I feel about you, is so new to me. I'd never liked someone so much and actually wanted to know someone as much as I want to know you. I just want you to know that I really care about you, and I don't care what people think of that." Cas smiled and leaned in to kiss Dean. "Goodnight, Dean." He whispered before exiting the car and going into his house.
That night, Cas went to sleep easily, with a smile on his face and dreams of Dean in his head.
