─Autumn, 1956─
Jean, age 18

In late October, Jean was commissioned to design a wedding dress for Peggy after she had decided to elope with Kurt.

Peggy told her not to go overboard, but Jean couldn't help herself. She poured all her love for her friend into that dress, sourcing the prettiest lace she could find, and hand-beading the bodice so that it shimmered when it caught the light.

It was a gorgeous gown, and Peggy looked even more gorgeous in it.

They had the affair at the courthouse an hour from Mayberry Ranch, where Peggy's parents had been married. The ceremony was small and over in minutes, but the group decided to celebrate well into the night, finding a nightclub to properly celebrate in.

Their chosen space was The Cosmo Club, a new dance club fit with a live band, full bar, and packed dance floor.

Drinks came first, then dancing.

Vincent took Jean all around the dance floor, dipping, twirling, spinning her—he was quite the dancer.

This trait was amongst the few that Jean reminded herself of each time she began to remember why she had broken up with him in the fall.

He was arrogant, self-centered, uncaring, and pig-headed, but he was a good distraction, so this made him handsome, a great kisser, and a good dancer.

"I'm done dancin' now," Vincent said as the song came to a close. "I'm bored and you keep steppin' on my toes."

Very handsome, an amazing kisser, and a phenomenal dancer.

Jean gave him a strained smile, tugging him by the hand over to a table where the happy couple sat.

Peggy had changed into a simpler dress, a pretty, white tulle one that Jean had made for fun. Peggy and Kurt had their chairs as close as they could get them, their hands intertwined and faces leaned in with an intimate conversation on their grinning lips.

Jean was happy for Peggy but was also envious. She wanted what her friend had—the love, the passion, the romance. It was like seeing one of her novels in person, that epic love that bridged fiction and reality.

She wanted it terribly.

Jean let go of Vincent's cold hand as she sat next to Peggy. "You two can head out if you want," Jean suggested. "I know you're probably ready to start the honeymoon," she teased.
