Familiar faces

It had been three days since Kari had awakened…and subsequently feinted.  Tenzin’s family, along with Korra, Bolin, and Mako were discussing what was going on as Pema busied herself with making breakfast.

“As much as I believed in the stories my father told me, I never fully expected to see Kari alive again.”

“Well…how can we be sure that she was not alive before, maybe she was just asleep in there,”

“Bolin, this is serious.  Even through the use of Korra’s  connection to the spirit realm, this could have happened, for a reason.”

“Mako is right.  We have very little information and Kari still hasn’t come to.  I’m starting to get worried.  All we can do is hope that she can answer our questions when she wakes.”

Pema walked over and handed Bolin a handkerchief of crumbs.

“Uh, Bolin, where’s Pabu?”

“He’s keeping an eye on Kari, the little rascal…”

At the same time, in a bedchamber across the island.

Kari, stirred.  A childlike smile twitched on her  face.  It was her first dream in a long time.  While it had felt like she was asleep for forever she only seemed to have nightmares of the faces of the spirits in the spirit realm, like she was a condemned soul.  Now, she was peaceful, and dreaming of love and the glory of the fire nation, her lifelong crush on the throne as firelord.

Something moved on the blankets.  Kari groaned and rolled over trying to coax her eyes to open.  As they did, she saw the most horrifying thing less than an inch from her nose.

It was a red, furry, ring tailed rat-thing.  – and it was…purring???

Back in the kitchen…

“You don’t think Pubu will get himself into any trouble do you?”

“Nah, she’s been asleep this long, what are the odds of her waking up now?”

An ear-piercing scream erupted from the other side of the building.

“Not good!” rushed Mako

In Kari’s haste to get that thing away from her Pabu was tossed across the room on one of the many pillows stacked on her bed.

Mako was the first down the hall.

“huh?”

Kari screamed.  Mako screamed back in shocked reponse.

Bolin tripped in, looking up to see Kari in a sitting fire bending fighting stance, fist aimed at his head and he screamed, continuing the screaming match.

Korra came in only to help Bolin up before getting a good look at Kari, but not before Tenzin swept in, a gust of air following him.

“What is it? What’s going on?” Instead of more screaming, another pillow flew across the room, hitting him right in the face.

The girl crouched on the bed looking ready to pounce even in the nightgown she had been changed into by Pema.  Instead of pouncing at the strangers, she leapt from the bed and through the window and was seen running off grounds.

“We gotta stop her.  The cliff is that way!”  Korra had taken charge and her friends ran in pursuit.

Kari had seen the cliff face and slowed to a stop, dropping to her knees and looking at her hands that had looked ready to firebend not even a minute ago.  She was crying.  The group had caught up with her.

“Hey, are you alri-?” Korra tried to ask before Kari turned and leapt from the cliff in a dive throwing her fists forward, a firebenders move, but when she saw nothing happen, she panicked and spun out of control, landing in the cold water on her back, unconscious yet again.

Korra and Mako jumped in with better dives and pulled her out.  She was able to bend the water out of her lungs but Kari still wasn’t breathing.  Tenzin wasn’t there yet so korra didn’t risk trying to put air in her lungs.  Mako pushed on her chest a few times, felt for a pulse, and put his mouth over hers and breathed air into her. After a while, her eyes opened.

“Oh…Zuko, my prince.” She gasped, reaching for his face,  “What has happened to our world?  Where are the others?”

“Shhh…rest now.   We’ll take care of you”
