When Worlds Collide

"Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others."

Ashanti noticed the disapproving stares as she and Ray sat together after Sunday service. Whispers spread among some of the regular congregation she had known for years.

When her friend and mentor, Pastor Joyce, approached with a frown, Ashanti braced herself. "May I have a word?" she asked brusquely, gesturing for Ashanti to follow.

In her office, Pastor Joyce cut straight to the point. "What is the meaning of this...dalliance with an outsider? You know how such behavior will be perceived."

"Ray is exploring faith sincerely. I'm merely offering guidance as Jesus taught," Ashanti replied gently but firmly.

The Pastor's frown deepened. "Do not be naive, child. This community has standards to uphold. Your association with that man brings us into disrepute."

Ashanti took a calming breath, though hurt by the judgment. "All Ray and I wish is fellowship free from prejudice. If some cannot look past appearances, that is on them."

A tense silence followed before Pastor Joyce sighed. "Tread carefully, Ashanti. Your choices have consequences beyond yourselves."

The warning hung heavy as Ashanti left, troubled. She confided in Ray about the exchange. He listened with empathy, then said, "We'll face this obstacle as we have all others - with patience, wisdom and love."

His faith reassured her. Still, more opposition arose when elders caught word. Ashanti found herself excluded from ministries and met with stony silence from former friends.

She prayed daily for strength and discernment. Ray offered steadfast support, committing to learn all he could to ease others' suspicions. When outright condemnation came from the pulpit one Sunday, Ashanti decided it was time to seek community elsewhere.

After the service, she and Ray consulted long into the night. Their bond had endured much, proving truer than any superficial judgment. In the end, love and truth were what mattered most. They would continue walking together.
