What does it mean to be a leader?
Can anyone be a leader?
Yes, if they posses the right skills.
What makes an effective leader? What makes a good leader? Are these two things the same thing?
An effective leader knows how to communicate their ideas and knows how to make decisions. A good leader is someone who has empathy and voices their thoughts for the greater good. An effective leader and a good leader are not the same thing. Compare Hitler and George Washington. They were both effective leaders but Hitler voiced thoughts that were not so great and caused the deaths of millions, while George Washington helped his country.
Biography
Erik Throvaldsson, otherwise known as Erik the Red, was a Norwegian explorer who discovered Greenland. He lived around c.950 - c.1000, over 1000 years ago. Erik left his home with his father, who had been exiled for manslaughter. They left for western Iceland, and later on in his life, he was exiled like his father for similar reasons around c.980.
Erik Thorvaldsson decided to explore the land to the west, which we now know as Greenland. When Erik left for the new land, he left with a small group of men. When they reached Greenland, they explored for two years, establishing personal control over the land. Erik named the country Greenland hoping to attract settlers.
Later Erik returned to Iceland, telling people about Greenland and convincing many people to come to the country. He helped lead 25 ships to Greenland with only 14 reaching the country.
