1 year earlier
I stood in line at my High School cafeteria, waiting to get my lunch. I looked around the lunch room, trying to find that familiar head of curls, but he was no where insight.
I stepped forward and got an apple and a sandwich, deciding that those two things probably wouldn't kill me. As I went to go pay for my small lunch, I felt a hand on my waist and saw somebody else hand over money to purchase my food.
"Don't worry about it, love." I smiled at the familiar deep voice coming from the guy I've fallen in love with over the years.
Harry Styles. Everyone's "dream guy." Well, his looks anyway. Nobody knew what he was really like, but I knew almost everything about him. We grew up together, and eventually once we became older and more mature, we realized our mutual feelings of becoming more than just friends. And boy was I happy about that.
I smiled wide while looking up at him.
"You don't have to pay for my lunch, Harry. I'm completely capable of coughing over a couple dollars for this garbage." I let out a laugh but the lady at the register didn't seem amused. He laughed at my horrible excuse of a joke as well and just shrugged off the comment I had made before. He was always doing this, I was never allowed to pay for anything anymore.
"What kind of boyfriend would I be if I didn't help pay for things every now and then?" He smiled at me before we made our way to the usual lunch table.
"Every now and then? Harry I haven't paid for a single thing since we've started dating! Besides putting gas in my car!" I laughed loudly while sitting down with him. Liam looked up at the sudden loudness.
"What are you two bickering about?" He raised an eyebrow at us, peeling his eyes away from the papers in front of him.
"We are most definitely not bickering. Just poking fun." I smiled and bit into my apple as Liam looked back down at what was laying in front of him.
I leaned over the table a little bit, trying to get a look at what got his attention today. The papers were coated in the familiar green camouflage.
"What are you reading, Li?" I looked at Harry then back at Liam.
"Well seeing as we graduate in 3 months, I figured I should start looking into what I want to do with my life." He didn't even bother looking up at us, but Harry leaned closer to see what it was.
"Liam, your joining the military?" Harry said in shock.
What? Military?
"Yeah, have you ever thought about it? They give you really good benefits with like insurance and life long policies and such. You can even go to a Naval Academy before being deployed if you want to get a degree first. But I'm thinking of just joining right into the Army."
I couldn't process the words coming out of his mouth. He stopped me at military. Why did he want to do that? Who in their right mind wants to do that right when they get out of high school? The thought just scared me.
"Liam, you do realize that you'll be sent to war with like, weapons and... you know, death..?" He laughed then looked at me. What's so funny?
"Of course, I'm fully aware of what comes with signing up for the Army, Bell. I want to defend my country. And don't think of the worst. Many soilders go unharmed and some are grateful enough to escape death by just facing an injury. Don't worry love, I'm a strong man." He smiled sweetly at me.
Dear god, please don't talk Harry into this.I looked to my left at Harry to see what he was thinking. He hasn't said a word once Liam started talking about all of this. Okay Harry, what's going on with you? Speak!
Nothing. No words. No movements. Was he really interested in this?
----
I placed my books away in my locker and grabbed the ones I needed to do homework tonight. It was the end of the day and I desperately needed to talk to Harry. He hasn't said a word to me since lunch and its scaring me a little bit. I don't want Harry going into the military!
I closed my locker shut then nearly shit my pants when I saw Harry leaning against the locker next to me.
"Geez Harry, you scared me half to death." I placed a hand on my chest, feeling how fast my heart was now beating.
"I'm sorry, love. I didn't mean to." He stood up straight and held his hand out for me, which I gladly accepted.
We walked down the hallway in silence, heading outside to Harry's car. I guess now would be a good time to ask him.
"Harry.. Why haven't you said anything since that talk with Liam at lunch?" I looked up at him while we were walking, curious to see his reaction.
He frowned then started chewing on his lip.
"It's kind of a shock really, seeing one of your best mates sign up for something amazing yet very dangerous. What would you do if I joined with him?" He looked back at me.
Um, I'm sorry. What? Did you just speak those words to me? Because you ARE NOT going anywhere.
"Um, well.. I wouldn't exactly like the decision. Like you said its dangerous. I just don't want you to leave and to find out your never coming back." I stopped walking completely while talking to him. He can't be serious.
He shrugged his shoulders and looked around.
"I know that, love. Trust me I do and I'm just as worried about it to. But this could be a good thing. I'm helping to not only protect you but this whole country." He let go of my hand and stepped a little closer to me while cupping my face in his hands and rubbing his thumbs on my cheeks."I know this is scary to you, I'm scared too. But maybe this is what I want to do. I'm doing this for you, baby. For us."
I let out a sigh. I was not liking this at all. I can't just let him go like that! But if this is really what he wants, then I'm going to make this the best next 3 months of his life.
