In search of answers

The next morning I wake up with the ring still in my hand. I need answers. But I know my family won't give me any. Which means I'll have to ask Sam.

As I get ready I debate if I should wear the ring or not. But leaving it behind feels like I'm leaving a part of myself, so I desire to wear it on a necklace and make my way down to breakfast. My mom is already up, hopefully not burning food this morning.

"Good morning, mom." I say while twirling the ring between my fingers. As she turns around to greet me, she notices the ring. She freezes and drops the pan she was holding on the ground. The loud noise alerts Jackson and I soon hear him running down the stairs to find out what the commotion is.

"Whats wrong?!" He asked. "NO MOM! Not the food again" he says as he notices the discarded food on the floor. Mom is still frozen staring at the ring until she finally snaps out of it and asks, " Where'd you find your ring honey?" Jackson finally looks up and notices the ring in question.

His face morphs from being distraught over breakfast to a blank face as to hide any indication of what this ring could mean.

"You guys are acting weird again. Why? I got the ring in a letter. Someone must of found it and sent it to me knowing it was mine." I half-lie. I'm tired of all these secrets and if they won't tell me themselves then I'll figure it out myself.

"Did the letter tell you who found it? Can I see it?" Jackson asked. I refused saying I threw it away just happy to have my ring back. My brother and mom exchange a look and went back to getting breakfast ready and getting ready for school like nothing happened.

At this point, I'm annoyed because if they truly cared for me they would stop keeping things from me.

"Why do you guys continue to keep things from me? What is it about the ring that has you acting this way?" I ask.

" Nothing, honey. We just know how much that ring meant to you so we're just shock but happy that you've gotten it back. If we knew who sent it we could just give them our gratitude." My mother responded.

"The note was anonymous. But you're reaction while yes it was shocked, did not come off as happy for me at all. I just know it has to do with the last three years so just tell me. I can handle it. I'm better now." I beg them to for once just tell me, what happened in those three years. But like always, I'm ignored and the topic gets brushed away as Jackson starts talking about his first day of school.

Atlas, I knew I would get no answers from them so, I don't understand why I keep trying. I get my school bag and let them know I'll find my own way to school and leave out the front door.  I'm start my walk to school, fidgeting with the ring, annoyed at how my family treats me. I can't remember anything but I have the right to know. I just feel like I'm missing a huge part of myself and they are keeping it from me.

I've made it at least a block away from home, when I hear a car approaching me.

" Mom, I really can't deal with you guys anymore today. I will literally go mad trying to decipher your lies." I say as the car comes to stop next to me. Only, it wasn't my mom that pulled up.

"Hey Kelly-Bear" Sam says with the biggest grin. "Need a ride to school?"

I take a moment to ponder if I could trust him or not but he seems to know me. Did I meet him in my lost years? I just have to know. If I can't even trust my own family, than trusting a "stranger" can't be so bad.

"Actually, yes I do. I underestimated how far school was from my home." I respond as I hop in the front with him. Maybe I can finally get some answers from someone who seems to be willing.
