"The legend of Cassiopeia..." The girl read aloud, mystified by the very sound of it. Her eyes wide, filled with the star dust of the gas giants she observed every night, so much so that they'd become a part of her.
"Cassiopeia was a queen. She was vain and boasted about being the most beautiful in all the land... the gods tired from her relentless vanity, punished her by sacrificing her daughter to the sea monster."
She held her breath before reading the next part, "Seemingly, Cassiopeia's strength became her own downfall." She glanced at the boy skipping rocks by the gushing stream. How careless and free he looked now, compared to the stoic expression he usually masqueraded. She could hear him laughing as he got splashed by a fish he had just attempted to catch. He squeezed the water out of the front of his Ordonian farm clothes and ran a hand through his dirty blonde (or was it brown? His hair color was always a mystery) hair, tousling it even more.
He seemed to have noticed her gaze because he turned to her with a ready, amused smile. In the moment their eyes met, the girl's smile faltered a bit- though only for a moment. For it was not the boy looking at her, but it was Cassiopeia.
The boy didn't seem to notice, for he turned away to skip another rock. The girl shook her head, berating herself for seeing impossible things. She shut her book, that was enough reading for today, and she subconsciously pushed the book away.
The boy was as confident as they came, getting into risky situations constantly. He was always acting upon impulse, which would often leave him with injuries. And, he seemed to have the illusion that he was invincible.
"Cassiopeia, Cassiopeia." A small voice in the girl's head sighed, echoing.
She tilted her head, observing the boy. Would there ever be a time when his courage would lead to his undoing? He was confident... would he ever let it get to his head? He was the pride of the village, would he ever leave?
"Hey! I caught a staminoka bass!" The boy grinned, one hand holding the fish upside down, the other on his hip, proudly. The sloshing sounds of the fish struggling made the girl snap back to reality, she pushed herself off the grass and rushed over to him.
She pointed to the fish, "Let it go... it's gonna die!" she said, a little bit too dramatically. The boy tilted his head, looking a little hurt "But-... I caught it..." he turned his head away. The girl nodded, quickly back tracking, "Well, yes- and that's pretty impressive... I mean barely anyone's caught one before." she perked up, seeing the boy's chest puff up with pride. She then added, "Can you let it go now... then you can catch it loads of times!" she guided the boy's hand with the fish towards the river.
"Cassiopeia, Cassiopeia." The voice taunted her.
He hesitated, but eventually his grip loosened and he let the fish go, a bit disappointed. The pout on his face was quickly replaced by a smile "Wanna hear about how I caught it?"
"Sure."
He looked at her, excited that she wanted to know about something he liked. He knew she didn't find fish the least bit interesting. Just like how he didn't find the specks of light in the sky interesting. She listened to him, patiently, trying to ignore the nagging feeling that was tugging at her.
"Cassiopeia, Cassiopeia."
the boy grinned, launching into a detailed explanation, "Alright, so I saw the fish and then I took a bunch of rocks and built a wall," He used his hands to gesture, as the two of them walked back to the farm. The girl nodded along, the book resting in the crook of her arm, trying her best to listen to boy's long lecture about the significance of rocks in fishing.
"Cassiopeia, Cassiopeia."
"And after that, you jump at it and grab it! It's slippery, so you've gotta hold it real tight!" The boy glanced at the girl curiously when she didn't answer. He stopped walking, making the girl stop too. He tilted his head to the side his eyes narrowing, "You seem weird... Did the fish freak you out or something?"
"Cassiopeia!" She blurted out without thinking. The boy looked taken aback, "Casi-what?" he raised a brow, looking confused. The girl shook her head, "It's-... It's nothing..." She mumbled "Don't worry about it..." she tugged his sunburnt arm, getting him to resume their walk. Before the boy could even get a word in she changed the subject.
"So... Tell me about that hawk-eagle thing you saw yesterday."
"Oh yeah! So it was this big and it had these sharp talons and-"
"Cassiopeia, Cassiopeia."
