Mom and Dad were at it again, I can hear them yelling again. I walk to their door and softly put my ear against the door to listen, ".....HOW DO.....BILLS?....YOU......EXPECT ME.......OVERTIME NO....." I hear a loud thud, there's crying and screaming. I stand and walk away to my room and lock myself in there. I look around there is nothing to do. I sit by my door in silence. I could hear the sound of my steady breathing.
"Hello." I say to myself
"Hi." I respond in a different tone.
"What's your name?" I ask the voice in my head.
"My name is Leon." Responds the voice.
"Hmm Leon. Can you be my friend? It gets pretty lonely when mom and dad fight, and it happens a lot. So maybe you can keep me company?" I ask Leon. Before he can answer I hear a knock at my door. I open to find mother, she has a new red mark. Its by her eye, she has more than I can count I don't know how she gets so many.
"Who were you talking to honey?" She asks me struggling to smile.
"Leon." I answer. She fakes a smile and walks away limping a little. I shut the door softly and sit on my bed. "Leon, can you not be only in my head? Because it would be easier to play if you weren't just a voice in my head. Maybe you can be one of those imaginary friends people have. Then we can play and talk and all."
"Sure, maybe we can play tomorrow when Ether isn't here." Leon answers
"But, Ether isn't here?" I say. The doorbell rings a few seconds later. I walk to the front door so I can answer. Ether is here she smiles, excitedly hugs me, and drags me outside by the arm. We play our game, Overdue, its where one of us play the Grim Reaper and we chase each other because whoever isn't the Grim Reaper is overdue and is supposed to be gone.
"Aren't you sooooo super excited for school tomorrow Rebel? I am! We are going to have so much in the group project! Tomorrow will be a super great excitement filled day!!!" Ether exclaims.
"I guess so." I mumble. A few hours pass and Ether walks home. I go inside and hear mom and dad whispering in the corner. I go to the fridge and look for something to eat, bleh, nothing good. I take an apple and walk to my room. I see a shadow in the corner of my room. The shadow waves, I wave back. It stays and will not move, I look around to make sure no one is in my room. Yes, I'm sure it's Leon. While I think this, the shadow slowly nods their head yes. It walks toward me and disappears right when it is next to me. I smile, and go to bed peacefully with Leon.
