"I like her, Kagura. I like Mio."
"I'm sorry?" Chains rattled gently as her fingertips left the cold metal in hurry. With a flurry of pink, the newly minted teenager stood up in shock, the world spinning and blooming with colors. Chills went up her spine and she widened her eyes, trying to absorb the information.
"I know, I'm so stupid." The man cladded in blue shook his head, lips frowning as he adjusted his classes onto the bridge of his nose. "It was just so sudden when I realized I did... I didn't know that I did, I swear Kagura."
Exasperated, Kagura sat back down on the swings, kicking the mulch from underneath her. Her heart was racing, face flickering with a multitude of emotions, but despite that, she smiled. A bitter feeling crawled up to her heart, but she squeezed her eyes shut. "Since when?" Her voice was on the edge of cracking, but she swallowed the lump in her throat with a question.
"I realized just five minutes ago-"
"What?-"
"I know that was sudden, but I really think I do." Tokatti heaved a sigh and looked up at the clouds. Then he turned towards her and his face was all flushed with embarrassment and terror.
"Kagura please, I think I'm going to die. Mio's going to kill me." Tokatti groaned, his face cradled in his hands. "She won't want to be friends with me; I could ruin our friendship even."
Sighing, Kagura stood up despite how wobbly her legs felt. She felt weak all over, conflicting emotions seeping the energy from her whole being. "There there." She patted his shoulder. "She's not the type of person Tokatti. You know that very well, don't you?"
"But she's going to hate me."
Kagura sighed, frustration starting to build. Whether it was devastation or his worry, she couldn't tell. "Said who? She'll just be confused at most. Mio's not heartless."
Despite Kagura's chiding, Tokatti still looked shaken up. "Come on. I swear, it won't be that bad." She leaned down to him at eye level, faces so close if she inched closer-
"Mio's kind. And even if she rejects you, she won't hate you. She wouldn't resent you for your feelings. You're her friend, and you're human. It doesn't matter, Tokatti."
He nodded slowly, her words sinking in. A reassured and determined look replaced his newfound horror. "Thank you, Kagura."
She had never seen him change his emotions that fast, it kind of scared her. Shaking her head, she smiled a fond smile at him, and he reciprocated.
"No problem. Just don't stress about it okay?" She turned towards her swing when he suddenly grabbed her wrist. Kagura widened her eyes, heart beating even faster than possible. She couldn't tell whether it was the dread and anxiety of his next words or the fact that he was holding onto her wrist so tightly — it was hard to tell as her thoughts began to swirl with emotions.
"You can count on me. I won't do that. " And after that, he let go of her wrist gently, a huge sunshine smile on his face despite the loud sigh that followed.
"I'm scared though."
"No need to be scared. You said you wouldn't stress right? Don't worry about it." Kagura paused, looking at Tokatti with sad eyes. She hoped he wouldn't notice. "You have me, too."
Once those words left her mouth, she realized that she could only feel the ghost of his fingertips on her skin, and how cold it really was that chilly spring day. At that moment, she realized that she had already lost.
