"Gabriel? Are you there?"

I knock on the bathroom door, pressing my ears to the still wood. There is no sound of water running; only an eerie silence answers back.

Placing my hands on my hips, I look around the room, wondering where he disappeared this early in the morning. When my sleep broke somewhat at around four, he wasn't there. I had gone back to slumberland thinking he was using the bathroom but it's nine and he hasn't returned.

The feelings I had fallen asleep to last night, the butterflies that had flown so wildly in my tummy, now sit with a bored sense of doom finding him gone.

Where did he go? Couldn't he just stay for today? Doesn't he know what today is?

A fresh wave of disappointment travels through me. I make up my mind to go in search of him but when I throw open the double doors, still in my nightclothes, I retreat with a gasp on finding Helene standing on the other side.

She is carrying a tray of orange juice and a plate covered with what I assume is breakfast.

"Breakfast in bed, Miss Bianchi?" she asks, holding the tray below her chin.

Her small eyes have a weird glint on them.

I blow out a sigh, shaking my head. "How are you everywhere?"

"I have been asking myself the same question," she replies in the same disinterested tone.

"Have you seen Gabriel?"

"He left."

The butterflies in my tummy take their last breath at the news. My limbs feel heavy as further disappointment bricks me into a wall of broken dreams.

"Left?" I repeat softly. "He's not healed yet."

Helene raises her chin, fixing me with a grave look. "Master De Luca doesn't care about his well-being when it comes to serious matters, Miss Bianchi."

Of course, his priority will be his criminal underworld even on this day. I was wrong to assume I could change anything in that man. Sucking his cock doesn't mean shit to him other than repayment for his sacrifice for me.

"When will he be back?"

"Two hours. Two days." Helene shrugs. "No one knows."

I lean against the door, holding myself on weak legs at the thought of how little I mean to my future husband. My skin crawls at the thought and I wrap an arm around my stomach, feeling the pain physically challenging.

Footsteps intrude on our conversation. I glance up, spotting a finely dressed Dario in a set of dark suit and dress pants running toward me. His expression says he had been waiting for me to open the door.

He comes to a stop beside me.

"Signorina, buongiorno," he greets cheerfully, a feeling I don't share.

"Buongiorno, Dario," I return with a sigh, resting my head on the door.

Helene squints at Dario, one of her hands extending to press against his chest, and to my amusement, she pushes him aside. "You might want to stay a foot or two away from her."

Dario gives her a puzzled stare. "Why?"

Helene drops her hand, placing it back under the tray. "Master De Luca doesn't like it when you're close to her."

Dario swallows while I quirk an eyebrow. Something must have happened last night because Dario immediately steps away from me.

"Thanks for the reminder," he mutters, his jaw clenching.
