Chapter Three

Friday. I woke up happily today, stretching my arms to the top of my bed, and my toes to the bottom. The sun was throwing beams straight through my bedroom window, illuminating the jewelry that was sprawling along the top of my dresser. I sat up in bed and checked my phone. No new messages, which didn't bother me very much. I haven't been particularly chatty with any of my friends back home for a few weeks, but I know they didn't mind.

Standing up, I slipped on a pair of loose dark grey slippers and pulled the light purple blanket from my chair pushed underneath the mahogany desk on the far side of my room. I wrapped the blanket around my shoulders as I padded down the steps leading into the living room. The white curtains that lined the large living room window were completely drawn open. I spotted my sister walking through the farmland, raising her arms at something that I couldn't see.

I sat down on the couch and flipped on the television. The Queen of Sauce, the replacement for what would be The Food Network in the city, rang through the silence of the house.

"Today's recipe is Baked Yams!" The overly enthusiastic voice rang, reminding me of the chef my sister follows religiously. I listened mindlessly to the recipe as ingredients popped up on the screen with the measurements required for each. I opened up my phone as I tucked my legs under myself on the couch, snuggling in. No work today. A little screen time never hurt anyone.

I opened up Instagram, and before the feed could refresh, I caught another glimpse of Abigail's post from last night. Sebastian is pretty.

I saw a few photos from my friends back in the city. I smiled, remembering the good times I had at school. I only made a few deep, everlasting friendships while there, but I did have some fun times. We used to steal the fake dinosaur heads from the Archeology lecture room and place them around the building to scare students (and faculty) from time to time. The best one was when we put a full Compsognathus body in one of our professor's cars. The body was fake, remade for educational purposes only, but we still got a kick out of it. Our professor threw a temper tantrum for a full day, but alas, no one was caught, and the other professors in the building were not sly about hiding their amusement.

I clicked on my own profile and checked any notifications I may have gotten. None. A few old ones in the queue still from weeks ago. I locked my phone and put it on the cushion next to me, finding the courage to slip out of my blanket and get ready for the day.

It was definitely getting colder. I was expecting it to snow soon and made a mental note that I didn't hear the birds as much this morning.

I pulled on straight-legged jeans and a loose fitting long-sleeve shirt with The Salmonberries scrawled on the front. I used to listen to every song they ever released, but I haven't kept up with them lately. As I put on some makeup, I scrolled through their discography and bopped to a few oldies but goodies. I straightened then curled my hair, pulling it half up into a pony tail and tying a white ribbon into it.

I'd probably have to change before we go out to the saloon tonight. I haven't been there yet, but I figured I should try to look better-than-presentable since apparently it's the night to mingle. My sister will probably introduce me every single person within the saloon tonight, which I guess isn't horrible, considering there's not many people in the town. I figured I'd recognize a few of them, too just from visiting as a kid.

I opened up my closet and thought about what I could wear tonight. A dress? I feel like that's just trying too hard. I pulled out a short black skirt, black tights, and a long sleeve green, striped top. That'll do. I left it on my bed.

I made my way into the kitchen and poured a bowl of cereal, sitting at the breakfast bar and scarfing down a few spoonfuls as I thought about what I wanted to do today. I know Sylvie will be working until she can't any longer, so that doesn't leave me with a ton of options. I haven't really explored as much as I'd like to. I don't remember the whole layout of the Valley since I haven't been here in ages, so maybe a walk sounds like a good time.
