Carla stood motionless before the High Council, bracing to receive disciplinary judgement after her disastrous unauthorized mission against Godzilla ended in tragedy. The faces of the twelve Elders stared down severely, making her feel small as when first seeking their approval years ago.
"Your actions have brought great shame upon our people, Commander Danning," the central Elder finally proclaimed after an uncomfortable silence. "Thanks to your reckless vendetta, we have nothing to show but mountains of corpses and a weakened strategic position against the Earth creature."
Carla winced inwardly but remained upright, accepting responsibility for the failed attack.
"I will humbly submit to any punishment the High Council sees fit," she responded somberly. "My only hope is the demonstration of our new photon cannon weapons planted seeds of doubt in Godzilla's mind that--"
"Enough!" interjected an Elder, his hologram flashing with annoyance. "That feral beast is utterly indifferent towards our technology and resolve. All your actions achieved was making humanity appear laughably impotent once again before an uncaring animal!"
The chamber rumbled with unanimous consent. Carla heard muted calls for everything from imprisonment to exile for her role in the disastrous mission. Her shoulders slumped under the weight of failure and condemnation, Godzilla's smug sneer flashing in her mind.
"Yes, I see that now, High Council..." Carla whispered downcast just audible enough for all to hear. "I only pray my blind thirst for vengeance has not doomed humanity's last hope completely..."
"Hope yet remains, Commander Danning," came an unexpected voice. Shocked, Carla looked up to see an unfamiliar alien standing amongst the seated Elders. His skin was coal black with an elongated head and eyes like burning embers.
"May I present Urzkartaga, a representative of beings recently discovered inhabiting a subterranean realm deep below Mars' surface," the lead Elder explained. "Possessors of advanced technologies and knowledge who have graciously offered their assistance with our Godzilla dilemma in exchange for ending their isolation."
Urzkartaga stepped forward, his lipless mouth unmoving yet Carla sensed he was communicating directly into her mind.
"We apologize for our unilateral interference with your people's affairs without proper introduction, Commander Danning," his "voice" echoed calmly in her head. "But when our monitoring devices detected Godzilla's savage attacks escalating after your courageous first strike, we felt compelled to accelerate our own project intended to eliminate this hostile creature."
Carla stared bewildered as behind Urzkartaga a hologram flickered to life displaying an astonishing image - a colossal robotic figure which resembled Godzilla himself. Shocked murmurs echoed throughout the chamber at the sight.
"We call it MechaGodzilla," Urzkartaga communicated proudly. "An autonomous battle construct employing technologies eons beyond anything seen on Mars. We believe this machine capable of defeating Godzilla utterly where all else has failed."
