The next day, Meara found herself in her new cabin, Cabin Number One. While it provided her with ample space, it also felt oddly lonely. She missed the camaraderie of her previous cabin, the familiarity of friends who had quickly become like family. The emptiness resonated within her, amplified by the haunting remnants of a nightmare she had that morning—one featuring a mighty storm over a rampaging sea.
In her mind's eye, she could see boats sinking and hear the distant screams of despair. Two ominous silhouettes fought fiercely above, one hovering in the sky and the other submerged beneath the waves. The sight was terrifying, yet alongside it, an unfamiliar blue light flickered, casting a sense of warmth and comfort amid the chaos.
As she replayed the nightmare in her head, a knock on the door pulled her from her thoughts. She leaped from her blanket, eager for any company, especially since being a child of a god deemed forbidden made her feel like an outcast.
Opening the door, she was greeted by her favorite brown-eyed satyr, Grover.
"Meara, Mr. D wants to see you," he said, offering a sad smile that hinted at the seriousness of the matter.
"Hey, Grover," she replied, sensing that this meeting was significant.
As they walked toward the main building, he stopped her abruptly. "Wait, we need to get Percy."
"Percy?" Meara echoed, her disapproval evident as she turned toward Poseidon's cabin.
"I noticed you two don't really like each other," Grover remarked casually, glancing sideways at her.
"It's hard to like someone so self-absorbed," she replied, shrugging her shoulders dismissively.
Grover sighed, as if he had had this conversation with Percy before. He knocked on Percy's cabin door, and when the boy emerged, his expression shifted from casual to surprised. "Hey, Gro—" he began, stopping short upon seeing Meara. "Breezie," he teased, a glint of mischief in his eyes.
"Breezie?" Meara raised an eyebrow, shifting her gaze between the boys.
"Yeah, I came up with it yesterday," Percy replied, smirking.
"Don't you have better things to think about?" she shot back, suppressing her annoyance.
"Let's hurry; we're already two minutes late," Grover urged, quickening his pace.
"Where are we going?" Percy asked with an exasperated sigh.
"The main building," Grover answered.
Upon arriving, they were greeted by the scrutinizing gaze of Mr. D and Chiron. Mr. D seemed unusually jovial, likely reveling in the drama, while Chiron sat composed at the head of a long table.
Mr. D began speaking, but Meara struggled to focus on his words as the wind howled outside the window, as if it were communicating a warning. Then Mr. D mentioned a quest.
"Do you accept?" he asked abruptly, not explaining any further.
"Details would be nice," Meara interjected skeptically.
"The details are the worst part," Chiron chimed in, his voice low and grave.
Meara recalled her nightmare—two silhouettes, one of water and one of the sky. "They're fighting, right?" she ventured.
"Yeah, Zeus and Poseidon," Percy added, as if it weren't painfully obvious.
Chiron and Grover exchanged tense glances.
"How do you know?" Chiron pressed, leaning closer.
"I don't know about him, but I had a nightmare about the sea and the sky last night—" Meara began, only to be cut off by Percy.
