It was hard to know where to begin. John knew where everything started, but that wasn't where it began. Not for him.

It started almost two years ago. He was sitting in bed next to his husband, watching an episode of The Bachelor  that they recorded on the DVR much to Alexander's chagrin. As the Caribbean male spent 56 minutes complaining about the "shallowness and cretinism" of the characters,  John tuned him out to enjoy the drama. He had just finished the last of the popcorn sitting in a bowl between them, which Alex had failed to notice amidst his ranting, and moved the bowl to the floor, where he was definitely going to forget about it and trip over it when he woke up tomorrow morning. Oh well.

When the show went to commercial, John looks to his husband, nodding, "I think Kylie's going to Hometowns. She's not gonna win, but I think he likes her a little better than Lori." His husband, worryingly, did not say anything for once.

"Babe?" John prodded, seeing the flash of Alex's eyes, which only gave insight into just how rapidly his mind was working in that instant.

Alex finally said in response, "I need to talk to you."

"You know that's, like, the worst possible thing you can say to a person, right?" John said as he muted the TV, "I can only assume that you're divorcing me."

Alex stayed silent. When John looked at him, he had a nervous, unreadable expression on his face that made John's stomach drop. No way.

"A—Are you divorcing me?" he choked the words out, his face becoming heated in a matter of seconds.

Alex reeled back and turned his whole body to face him in an instant, like he was hearing him for the first time. "What? No. No! I would never— no, absolutely not! Don't even joke about that, Laurens. Jesus" Alex, to his credit, most likely forgot to include John in his internal conversation again, his former last name-turned-nickname rolling off of his husband's tongue smoothly from years of experience.
