Scarlett's POV
I angrily pace my living room my phone in hand. "You're telling me a day before the wedding that you can't perform at the ceremony?""Yeah sorry love," he says, his Australian accent thickening. "Just that my drummer he isn't comfortable performing for Evan since his dad and all."
"His dad?" I question.
"Yeah apparently he raped my drummer's mum or something," he says nonchalantly.
"Yeah okay, I understand," I sigh. "Do you by any chance know of any bands available?"
"Awe there's this good punk rock band-" I hang up on him and scream in frustration.
Robert comes running out of his room, bat in hand. "What?" He asks worriedly.
"The band cancelled," I growl. "And now I have no one to play at the reception."
"Just get a DJ," Robert answers. "I know a guy."
"But Evan wanted a band," I sigh.
"Well sometimes Evan can't always get what he wants," Robert murmurs. "I'll call my guy and ask him to do this favour for me."
"Will he do it though?" I ask.
"Well he owes me, so I reckon," Robert answers. He gets his phone out and dials a number. The person on the other end answers. "Hey Sargent how's life treating you?" Robert asks. I raise an eyebrow when Robert laughs. "Yeah sounds about right," Robert says. "Anyway I wanted to cash in that favour, my brother is getting married tomorrow and the band cancelled." Robert snorts. "Yeah, I know what wankers."
I giggle a little.
"Yeah, so can you DJ?" Robert asks. "Yeah? Thanks, I'll give the wedding planner your number and she will give you the details."
Robert hangs up and I throw my arms around him. "Thank you."
"It was no trouble," he murmurs into my hair. I pull away just an inch and I see his eyes go down to my lips. "We can't," he whispers, knowing what I was thinking.
"Why not?" I whisper back.
"Well I can't think right now when you're looking at me like that," he says, making me smile a little.
"Good," I murmur and then lean up and kiss him.
It just felt right.
Roberts's control snaps and soon he was grabbing my face and plunging his tongue into my mouth.
As soon as it starts, Robert is quickly pushing me away. "Damnit Scar," he snaps.
"We can't deny this any longer," I murmur. "Robert we were meant to be together. You're it for me. I-"
He slaps his hand over my mouth to stop me from saying that word. "You can't," he whispers.
I lick his hand, like I know he hates and he rips his hand off my face. "I love you," I tell him. "And that will never change, since I never stopped. Even when you left and broke my heart."
"You're better off without me," he says. "Scar I can't be him."
"You aren't," I whisper.
"Say that now till ten years from now and I'm hitting you because you didn't cook my steak right," Robert growls.
"You are thinking too much about this," I murmur. "But Robert, do you honestly think I'd stay if you ever laid a hand on me?"
"I don't think so," Robert says. "But if you love someone so much you stay, hoping they get back better."
"You are a good person," I say. "The only time you have ever raised your hand is to defend the people you love. Your dad and grandpa raised their hands to insert dominance on their family and make sure they controlled them."
Robert takes my hand and leads me over to the couch. He sits down and pulls me into his lap, wrapping his arms around me and resting his head on my chest.
When we were younger he used to do this when he was overwhelmed. So I stayed quiet and gently stroked his hair.
Baby steps.
*
"You May now kiss to celebrate this union," the priest says and everyone claps as Evan leans down and kisses Stephen. They walk down the aisle and everyone around me starts to mingle. Georgie rushes over to me and pulls me in for a hug. "Scarlett you did such an amazing job," she gushes
"Days not over yet," I chuckle awkwardly.
"You look beautiful," Cole murmurs, leaning over and kissing my cheek.
"You look like Margot Robbie," Hayley whispers.
"Awe thanks Hayley," I say.
"Let's go girls," Cole says, grabbing both Hayley and Rosie's hands and leading them out of the church.
Georgie winks and rushes off too and it's when I realise Robert was walking over. God, he fitted that suit nicely. He had his hands tucked into his pants pockets and he looked unsure about talking to me. "Hey," he says awkwardly.
"Hi," I murmur. I clear my throat. "So can you believe Evan is married?"
"Not really," he chuckles. "You, Uh did a good job."
"Reception still to come," I say.
"Evan should be forever in your debt for what you've done today," Robert says. "Not a lot of people would step up and do this."
"Well if you remember correctly I have a lot of guilt," I whisper.
"Ah yes," he says. "Hard to forget since I'm partly to blame for the guilt."
"Do you think if we just told him then, everything would've been fine?" I question.
"I don't know," he answers. "No matter what he was going to be angry."
"Hard not to think about the what-ifs," I say. "Like what if you came to Harvard with me?"
He smiles sadly. "We'll never know."
He takes my hand and we walk out of the church together.
I want those ten years back
