They stepped inside to find Alexis sitting cross-legged on her threadbare sofa, surrounded by candles and various arcane artifacts. She looked them up and down with a cool, appraising glance before motioning for them to take a seat.
"What can I do for you, Detectives?" she drawled, her voice lilting over the word "detectives" as if it were a curse.
Mia glanced at James, taking a deep breath before speaking. "We're investigating a series of murders," she began, "all with similar tattoos. We believe that they might be connected to your circle."
Alexis's eyes widened slightly at this, but she maintained her composure. "And what makes you think that?" she asked, her voice cool and detached.
"Well, for one thing," James interjected, "the killer seems to be targeting people involved in the occult. And for another, we found a lead that traced back to one of your studios."
The woman raised an eyebrow, seemingly unimpressed. "So, you're here to accuse me?" she said, her voice taking on a dangerous edge. "I'm afraid you're barking up the wrong tree."
Mia leaned forward, meeting Alexis's gaze directly. "We're not here to accuse you of anything," she said. "We're just asking for your help. We think there might be a connection, and we need someone who knows about this world to help us understand it."
Alexis considered this for a moment, her expression unreadable. Finally, she sighed and stood up, gesturing for them to follow her into another room. It was a study of sorts, lined with shelves overflowing with books and scrolls on subjects ranging from demonology to alchemy.
"Very well," she said, sitting down at a large, ornate desk. "Tell me what you know, and perhaps I can offer some insight."
Mia and James related the details of the investigation to Alexis, including the murders and the similar tattoos found on each victim. Alexis listened intently, her expression growing more concerned with each new detail. When they finished, she sat back in her chair and steepled her fingers, deep in thought.
"It is possible that someone within our circles is behind these murders," she said finally. "But it could also be the work of an outsider, someone who is merely using our symbols and rituals for their own twisted purposes."
"So, you're saying it could be someone like us?" James asked, a note of uncertainty in his voice.
Alexis gave him a pitying look. "No, Detective, I'm not saying that. Anyone who truly understands the power of these practices would not use them in such a manner. The killer is not one of us. They are merely a copycat, a child playing with dangerous toys."
"But why would they target people in the occult community?" Mia asked.
"To send a message, perhaps," Alexis replied. "Or maybe they are simply trying to prove that they are more powerful than us. Either way, it is clear that we are dealing with a disturbed individual who is seeking attention."
Alexis stood up and walked around the desk, her expression grim. "I will do whatever I can to help you find this person, Detectives," she said. "But you must be careful. The farther you go down this path, the closer you will come to crossing the line between the living and the dead. And once you're on the other side, there may be no going back."
Mia and James exchanged glances, feeling the weight of Alexis's words. "We appreciate your help," Mia said, "and we'll do our best to keep ourselves safe."
Alexis nodded, seemingly satisfied with their response. "There are several steps you can take to protect yourselves," she began, sitting back down. "First, you must always maintain a strong psychic shield. Visualize a bubble of white light surrounding you, protecting you from negative influences. Second, never perform any rituals or spells that you do not fully understand. And third, be cautious around those who may have an ulterior motive. Trust your instincts, and if something feels wrong, it likely is."
As Alexis spoke, she gestured gracefully with her hands, weaving an invisible tapestry of words and symbols in the air. Her voice was calm and soothing, yet filled with the power of ancient knowledge. Mia and James found themselves hanging on her every word, mesmerized by the depth of her understanding.
When she finished, Alexis leaned back in her chair, regarding them with a measure of pride. "Remember," she said, "the occult is not a game. It is a serious pursuit, one that demands respect and responsibility. If you are not careful, it can consume you. But if you approach it with an open mind and a pure heart, it can be the key to unlocking the mysteries of the universe."
Mia and James thanked Alexis once more, and as they left her apartment, they felt a newfound sense of determination and purpose. They knew that the road ahead would be dangerous and uncertain, but they also knew that they would not be traveling it alone. They had the support of someone who understood the world they were entering better than anyone else. And with that knowledge, they felt a little bit more prepared to face whatever lay ahead.
