The story of how Hyunjin came to be part of the family was a little longer and very time consuming. He was at first only a foster kid, along with his brother. Adopting Changbin was the easy part but when Chan tried to do the same for Hyunjin, the boys' parents showed up and refused to give up their younger son.
"This is so stupid!" Hyunjin slammed his door behind him, slumping down in the beanbag chair in the corner of his room. Felix was right behind him.
"I still think your my brother. Adopted or not" He hoped that would help. Hyunjin just huffed, not saying anything. He was filled with hatred for his parents; why couldn't they just let him be happy!?
"Thanks Felix" Hyunjin appreciated the attention. The door opened and Chan came in.
"What was that?" Chan demanded. He had only just came into the house after taking an important call when he heard Hyunjin slam his door and went to check out what was wrong.
"When were you going to tell me that you couldn't adopt me?" Hyunjin glared up at his foster dad. Chan did have his arms crossed but he dropped both of them to his side, worried.
"Hyunjin, I was going to tell you" Chan sighed. He has been hoping to have a calm conversation about this where he explained why he couldn't adopt Hyunjin as soon as they had thought.
"When? The day you told me was going to be the day I was adopted? Were you going to tell me then?!" Hyunjin retorted.
"That is not fair. I would never do that to you" Chan argued. Hyunjin didn't seem to even realize he said anything.
"You know sometimes, I wonder if you actually want to adopt me! Is this all just some sick game to?! Pity the foster kid and keep leading him on until he breaks!?" Hyunjin was beyond angry. Nothing anyone said was going to convince him otherwise.
"Hwang Hyunjin! That is enough!" Chan snapped, raising his voice just enough to get Hyunjin to snap out of his anger.
"No! I hate you!" Hyunjin took a deep, shuddering breath and realized what he had just said.
"Felix. Go downstairs" Chan didn't take his eyes off of Hyunjin. Felix got up quickly, patting his brother on the arm and running out of the room to go bother someone else. Hyunjin curled up on his bed, trying to hide how much he was crying.
"Come here, Hyunjin" Chan held his arms out to the kid. Hyunjin crawled over, ending up in Chan's lap.
"First of all, I did not take you in just because I pity you. I wanted to bring you in and take care of you so do not ever doubt that. And secondly, I didn't want to say anything but your parents are not willing to give you up and it's making things harder. I'm doing my best to get custody of you but it's not easy right now" Chan explained.
"But you adopted Binnie-hyung?" Hyunjin pointed out.
"I don't understand it either but I am doing my best. Please trust me on that" Chan added. Hyunjin nodded, picking at his hand.
"And third, you do not talk to me like that. I understand that you are upset and you have every reason to be but you do not yell at me or your brothers. Do you understand?" Chan scolded.
"Their not my brothers" Hyunjin muttered, avoiding eye contact with his foster dad. Chan light slapped the side of Hyunjin's leg, just enough to shock him.
"Yes they are. Now, do you understand what I'm saying?" Chan repeated. Hyunjin nodded, leaning into Chan's touch. Chan kissed the top of his head, holding Hyunjin closer to him.
"I love you Hyunjin. Your my son and you always will be, no matter what happens" Chan declared. Hyunjin couldn't hold it in anymore and he started sobbing uncontrollably. The noise attracted the other boys.
"Why is he sad?" Seungmin pointed to Hyunjin.
"Jinnie is feeling a little left out of the family and doesn't feel like you guys are his brothers because he's not adopted yet" Chan changed his tone to something lighter so that the boys didn't get upset.
"That's shit" Minho declared, crossing his arms.
"Minho" Chan shook his head at the oldest. Minho just huffed but he didn't take his words back.
"Min is right. You became their brother the second you walked through that door. Although, it might have been actually when you let Felix have your ice cream because he dropped his on the sidewalk." Changbin added. Hyunjin laughed a little at the reminder of that and also at the pout on Felix's face.
"See, the boys love you just as if you were their blood brother. There is no difference between you guys" Chan turned back to Hyunjin. He appreciated the boys trying to make their brother feel better.
"Actually, that's not true. Felix is Australian" Minho corrected.
"G'day mate!" Felix perked up, trying to do his best Australian accent which then caused Seungmin to try and copy him.
"And your taller than Changbin-hyung" Seungmin added in, taking the chance to throw an insult at his hyung.
"Yeah, I am" Hyunjin grinned at Changbin, getting up off Chan's lap and walking over to his brothers.
"The point is, your different but you have the same family. If you really want to, you could always change your last name around the house to make it seem more official and I'm sure the principal and your teachers would have no problem with your name being Bahng Hyunjin at school" Chan suggested.
"Really? I can do that?!" Hyunjin's eyes got brighter with excitement.
"Yep, I can call the school tomorrow" Chan nodded once and suddenly he had an arm full of eight year old.
"Thank you, appa" Hyunjin whispered, holding on tightly to Chan. The other boys decided that they were not going to let Hyunjin have this moment alone and crowded around, hugging their brother too. And despite the struggles, Hyunjin was adopted a year and a half later once his parents finally gave up on fighting with Chan and moved to the US.
