AMIDST THE GLITTER, fireworks, and celebration that New Year's Eve brings, is the chaos from it all. The drinks are becoming too many, the laughter's too loud, and the music too noisy. Seeking privacy from noises and stress is something April Grant had grown used to. She was a professional at it.

When stress, anxiety and pressure were taking over her mind, she knew she needed to get away, to isolate herself in an attempt to calm herself down. She was a person who continuously held herself to the people she was close to, instead of going up to new ones, to spare herself from the familiar feeling of betrayal.

She had been let down so many times. She loved too hard. She cared too much. She was too sensitive. April Grant was easy to break and to then just leave. She was enough for the party, not for the aftermath. New Year's had always been great at reminding her of the people that existed in this world. She got kissed after the countdown, but she would wake up alone.

This time it was somewhat different.

December 31st 2021,

With drunk, shaky steps she exited the bathroom in her apartment, once again being met by the deafening room.  April had no idea where her friend Laura was, who in comparison to April, was almost concerningly outgoing and had most likely gotten caught up in the chaos and disappeared somewhere. At that moment, she could not understand why she had let herself listen and agree to Laura's begging for a New Year party in the large apartment that April owned.

As she desperately searched for Lauras's figure a familiar voice called from across the room.

"April!"

She turned and saw Oliver, Laura's boyfriend, and could almost immediately feel how relief flooded her body. 'Thank God I at least know one person apart from Laura' April thought to herself. She barely even knew any of the guests at the party, they were all here because of Laura.

"Hi," She smiled once she reached the French man, "Sorry but do you know where Laura is?"

"Uh I think she's in the kitchen"

"Perfect, thanks," April replied before hurrying in the direction he had pointed even though she knew every little spot and detail of her home.

"Laura!" She yelled once she saw her blonde friend.

"Hi love" Laura hugged her, "I was just getting us some drinks"

"Great, the countdown will start soon"

"I know," She told April as the two headed back to the living room she had just previously left, "There's someone I would like to introduce you to"

"Really? Who?"

She didn't get an answer before they were back at the spot where Oliver had been waving her over just a minute prior. April didn't even have any time to realise what was about to happen before Laura called out a name she'd only really heard come out from Oliver's mouth.

But there he was. Amidst the chaos and mess of her apartment, a grinning Laura directed him towards the brunette. He was beautiful, there was no need to deny that. And when he smiled at her, oh my god, she almost melted.

"I'm April"  April didn't know if it was the alcohol talking or not, but she put her hand out to greet him first. Usually, it was the other way around. His hand shook hers gently, and for a moment, he felt that he should let it stay there for a little longer.

"I'm Charles"

And the rest was history.
