"Ume, time to wake up! Do you plan on sleeping through the entire day?" I opened my eyes hearing my mother call me from downstairs. I slowly sat up in my bed and looked out the window. The sun was bright and warm, as it should be during a summer day. I kicked off my blankets and hopped out of bed. As I made my way down the stairs and into the kitchen I could smell pancakes, eggs, and bacon; my favorite breakfast. "Geez, it's about time. Mom said I couldn't eat anything until you got up." I turned around to see my older brother towering over me. "Sorry Mako, but if you wanted to eat so badly why didn't you just wake me up?"
"Cause Mom said not to," he grumbled, "she said growing girls need lots of sleep."
"Well they do." our mother chimed in.
"Ok but sleeping in till almost noon? That's just weird." I shot him a glare as we sat next to each other at the table.
"She gets it from your father," she giggled, "she is just like him." I hadn't thought about before but she was right. My father and I were very similar in personality and looks. I had inherited his white hair, pale skin, and purple eyes. Mako on the other hand took after our mother, who was tan with deep brown eyes and black hair. "Hey Mom, where is Dad anyway?" I asked while shoveling pancake into my mouth and realizing for the first time that he wasn't there. She gave me a bright smile and said, "Well, since you turned five today he's out enrolling you into the Ninja Academy." About an hour later the front door opened and my father stepped into the house. "Daddy, Daddy is it true? Am I an academy student?" I asked as I jumped into his arms. "Ah, happy birthday Ume, and yes it's true. Starting in a week, you my dear daughter, will begin your training as a ninja!" He lifted me high into the air and spun in a circle while we both laughed. "And I know you'll do great!" he encouraged me as he set me down. "It'll be easy since you've already taught me stuff! I bet I'll be the top of the class!" I cheered. "Top of the class or not, I bet you'll never be as great a ninja me!" my brother taunted pridefully. Our dad swiftly smacked him on the side of his head. "Hey, you're seventeen and she's five. Stop being so competitive. Besides," he kneeled beside me and gently placed a hand on my head, "she's got a lot of potential. Someday she might even be better than me." He closed his eyes and smiled down at me. Hearing this from one of the best ninja in Konoha raised my spirits to new heights. I mimicked his smile and nodded in agreement. Suddenly he stood and smacked his fist into his palm, "Oh yeah, Mako your friend is outside waiting for you." I gasped and squealed "Kakashi!" I rushed outside to the front yard and immediately hugged the silver haired ninja. "Hi, Kakashi-niisan!"
"Hey, Ume happy birthday." Kakashi and Mako were best friends and the same age, but Kakashi was cooler. "Ume, stop bugging him!" Mako walked up to us and flicked my forehead. "And how come you never greet me like that?" I looked at him angrily and rubbed my forehead. "Because you're a jerk! And because Kakashi's way cooler than you. And a better ninja!"
"Well if you love him so much, why don't you marry him!"
"Maybe I will!" I clamped myself around Kakashi again. He laughed and joked, "Well I'd be honored to have such a cute wife," I triumphantly stuck out my tongue towards Mako until Kakashi continued with"but that's not why I'm here. I came to tell you, Mako, that we have a mission tomorrow. You need to meet me by the village gate tomorrow." I was jealous. Even though I made fun of him, my brother was a great Jounin and always went on important missions for the village. Kakashi turned and said "Well I gotta go, see ya." I tugged on his sleeve.
"Ah, wait. Don't you wanna stay for cake? Our mom's making it."
"Well your mom's baking is amazing..." He stood and thought about it before shaking his head and saying "I wish I could but I'm really busy. Can you save me a piece?" I smiled, gave a thumbs up and said "Got it!"As he left Mako chuckled."He's probably not busy, he just wants to read those books of his."
"Yeah," I sighed, "but I'll save him some cake anyway." That night, my mother baked a delicious chocolate cake. My family sang to me, we ate the cake and then we moved on to my presants. I received many great gifts, but the best was a black hooded coat. My mother had made it for me. It was too big but she said I would look like a super cool ninja once I grew into it. I felt myself getting more and more tired so I dragged myself to bed and quickly faded into a peaceful sleep. My dreams were suddenly interrupted when someone grabbed me by the shoulders. "Ume, Ume wake up please. We have to go!" I could hear from the voice that it was Mako, but he sounded strange. Was it... Fear?
