The next morning, Shuri walked with her friends, family and contracted Servant towards nearby French towns. Jeanne's reasoning as it was yesterday was simple: Without knowing enough, it made no sense to just rush towards Orleans. Better to scout first. The party formed a somewhat haphazard column of pairs. Shuri and Jeanne were the first row, Leon and Mash in second, and then Dad and Rose in the third with Fou hitching rides.

"We're almost at La Charite." Jeanne called out through the wooded countryside. "If we can't get any information here about Orleans, we'll have to get closer."

"You know the land better than we do." Shuri told her.

"Indeed. Which is why it troubles me so much that a 'me' can have such hatred for it."

Beep! Beep!

"Wait a minute. A Servant was detected just ahead of your current path!" Roman cut in. "Its location is La Charite!"

Everyone jolted. Understanding the potential problem, the group of six broke into a run towards the town. A second warning became visible in the sky. Smoke. The inevitable origin of the smoke became visible along with the town. La Charité was ablaze.

"It couldn't be...." Jeanne muttered amidst the ruins.

"Doctor, life form detection." Mash requested.

"It's no use. There's nothing left alive that town!" Roman answered.

"Wait! Just now a sound!" Jeanne noted.

"What that's-"

Shuri's eyes fell on a hooded figure. The only thing visible to her was glowing blue orbs where the eyes should have been.

"No.. it can't be!" Jeanne voiced her horror.

"It appears they've turned into the living dead. Master, I will scatter them!" Mash informed Leon. Shuri shared the horror her Servant felt. Killed and turned into what was basically a zombie. Death was one thing. Becoming this was worse.

"Jeanne, we'll have to deal with them." Shuri reminded the Servant with her and Rose.

"Right." The Saint charged forward to meet the enemy. As expected, She made quick work of what used to be people. What Shuri did not expect to see was Jeanne panting after doing so. Dad, Leon and Mash were showing little strain on their end. Jeanne was not joking about the weakened state.

So when Jeanne began attacking another wave of living dead, her quarry came under fire. Shuri and soon Rose casted their magic at the attackers in support. Lightning and Destruction magic either mauled or killed them, making it easier for Jeanne. Simultaneously, Shuri opened her mana reserves some more. Just in time, for it seemed that more Wyvern descended upon them.

Except the Wyverns decided to start devouring corpses instead.

"Stop it!" Jeanne charged them, either killing the beasts where they stood or driving them off. Before Shuri knew it, silence fell over the desolated settlement. Jeanne's expression was grim.

"It's likely that the other me is behind this."

"But we don't know for sure yet." Rose tried to reassure her.

"I appreciate the sentiment, but no. I can tell. What I don't understand is why. How much hate do you have to have to wreck such havoc?"

"Alters have a way of flipping everything upside down." Dad told the Servant.

"KSH! BEEP! Heads up! The Servants that left have doubled back! They you're there!" Olga's voice cut in.

"Headcount." Dad asked.
