On the stage, it was perfect, the show was moving flawlessly. Backstage? It was chaos. The star was about to preform, but everyone and everything needed to be perfect.
Our star, our main star, Jade. The ultimate actor, a rising star, only destined to go hirer! Our back up star, one who didn't shine much, if anything, he didn't shine at all. Reo, the ultimate understudy, the name isn't appealing on most resumes if you don't know the term.
Even though he wasn't needed, Reo was still prompted to get ready 'just in case' the star of tonight needed a break, or had to leave. But deep down he knew, he knew he'd never get his chance. So close to the spotlight yet he's so far off. "Jade! Get ready in position! You start in 2!" The director called from afar, prepping the stage hands for the light changes.
Reo sighed, he was forced to be by the stage, to watch. He was forced to see someone fulfill his dream, the thing he wanted to be doing. He couldn't be mad at her, no, Jade was an angel. He cared for her, truly. The role of the duo, however our a sour taste in his mouth. So flawless, so easily chosen. Never the second option.
Reo didn't know what that felt like.
Jade turned back to him, "Wish me luck! Even though I won't need it!" She smiled, excited for opening night. Reo gave her a half hearted smile back, "Don't break a leg!" He joked, only partially joking. He wouldn't harm her, he just wants his chance.
Jade turned to the crowd, making her entrance, immediately slipping into the rhythm of the song, as if she belonged. Reo was forced to sit there, only having to watch. He was all dazzled and well dressed, but he wouldn't have anyone to show off for. No one really pays attention to the background characters as it is, no one would pay attention to the back up actor. He never had a chance.
The night went great, the show was amazing, the atmosphere was light. The encore was outrageous, everyone cheered. When everyone made their final exit off stage, happily celebrating behind set, Reo still sat in his seat. Watching, waiting for his chance. The spotlight slowly begin to fade, in front of his tired eyes.
He couldn't be mad, Jade was his friend. But...it's hard watching something you desire be taken in front of you. The light was gone, yet he still sat, waiting, watching. He knew he wouldn't get it.
The chaotic backstage started clearing out, some going to celebrate the amazing performance, others heading off to home. He felt a hand touch his shoulder, dragging him out of his trance. Jade.
"You coming? Everyone did so well tonight so we're going out to eat!" She said, grabbing his hand and leading him out the backdoor.
Everyone did so well.....everyone but him.
