Chapter Three
"So, let me get this straight.." Lily takes a sip of her coffee. "So you just ghost him for two weeks straight?"
"Yep," I say, in-between munching my chocolate croissant.
"And he didn't call you after that?"
I snort, "Nope." And that's the humiliating part. That he just up and left. Lord knows I want to call him, curse him with every profanity I know, which is a lot, and hang up.
After answering that phone call and hanging up right after, I think I was in so much of a shock because everything that happened after that was a blur. I didn't want to deal with any of it at first, so after Roman came out of the shower, I made up excuses about people needing me in the shelter as soon as possible. Luck was on my side when he informed me he had business emergency in London and didn't know when he'll be back.
"I can't believe you waited 2 weeks to tell me!" My best friend exclaims, sounding a bit hurt. Our friendship started almost two decades ago when this red-haired girl offered me a lollipop on the first day of elementary school. We couldn't be more different. While I was shy and kept things to myself most of the time, she was the social butterfly that everyone loves. She was the sole reason I survived those horrible years of growing up.
Moving to a big city was part of the pact we made as kids and the fact that we're here in New York as adults and living our dreams is so surreal. While I got into vet school, she pursued communications and dwelled into wedding planner business after college. She made a name for herself, which I'm so proud of.
"I'm sorry, Lil. I guess I don't want anyone to know I'm a home wrecker, especially you. But I can't keep it anymore. It's making me crazy. I go between wanting to kill Roman and calling him to ask for the truth."
She nods understandingly. "This must be killing you." She says, reaching to touch my hand.
I can only nod. She's the only one who understands why this took a toll on me, with everything that had happened in my past. "Do you think there's a possibility that she's not his fiancée?" she asks carefully.
"Why would someone lie about that? I mean, he and I didn't exactly spend our time getting to know each other on a personal level. I don't know anything about him except that he's really good in bed, which is making me sick all over again to think about now that I know he have a fiancée!" I exclaimed in hush hush voice, not wanting anyone to hear this humiliating conversation.
"Yeah," I sighed. "What should I do, Lil?"
"You have to ask yourself, will it kill you not knowing?"
--
I love Central Park the most in the morning. The air felt clear, it was quieter than it was at afternoon and what I loved the most; People were minding their own business. I made it a routine to take the shelter dogs here before starting my shift at the vet. Benny and Trip were the lucky ones today.
Benny just turned 1 and was the most loving great dane I've ever met. He was surrendered by his owner 4 month ago and had been living at the shelter since, because he was getting too big for their apartment – which made me angry thinking about it. People can be really dumb getting cute puppies without thinking it through. Trip on the other hand was a skittish 5-year-old frenchie, surrendered because of his heart disease and they couldn't afford the vet bill.
I wish I could open my house to them, but unfortunately, with the size of my apartment right now, not to mention that my building prohibit animals inside, I couldn't. The best thing I could do for them was giving them enough love every time I'm with them.
