Harry has been on tour for what feels like forever, and he misses Y/N more than anything. He's sitting on the edge of the bed in his hotel room, staring out the window at the busy, fast life of the city below feeling lonely and homesick when he remembers the promise he made to her before he left. He pulls out his phone and dials her number, hoping she's still awake.
On the other side of the world, Y/N is sound asleep when her phone starts ringing. Woken by the ringing noise of her phone, she groggily goes to tap the snooze button, expecting it to be her alarm. I swear it couldn't have been more than two hours since I closed my eyes, she thinks. The blaring noise disappeared, but in its place she heard what sounded like a voice. Confused, Y/N reaches back for her phone that she tossed aside after allegedly hitting snooze.
First she notices it was indeed not her alarm going off, but actually a call she answered. Upon closer inspection, it's three in the morning, her eyes are still adjusting to the brightness, she realizes it's Harry on the other end of the line. Suddenly as if something possessed her, she was feeling quite awake. Eyes wide as she places the phone to her ear with shaky hands, as if Harry would disappear any moment.
"You there? 'Ello?" A confused voice rang through, Harry. And when she hears Harry's voice, her heart skips a beat. Y/N is surprised to hear from Harry at this hour, but she's thrilled nonetheless. She misses him terribly, and hearing his voice fills her with warmth and comfort.
"Sorry, sorry." She rushes out. "Phone slipped from my hand, couldn't find it for a second,'' she explains, slight truth bending since she knows once Harry realizes the late hour back home he would make her go back to sleep.
"Hey, babe," Harry says. "I miss you so much."
Y/N can hear the longing in his voice, and it makes her heart ache. "I miss you too," she says softly. "How's the tour going?"
"It's great, but it's also exhausting. I'm in a different city every night, and I don't get much time to rest," Harry explains.
"Hmm what are you doing now? Why don't you sneak in a nap right now?" She hums out, moves to sit up and fluffs her pillow, before sitting back against it, in an attempt to allow herself to be alert and attentive to the conversation.
"Just have some time before sound check," Harry replies. "It's hard to sleep without you here. But I'll manage." He explains, tone laced with slight frustration. "It's not the same without you here. I just wanted to hear your voice."
"Aww baby, you don't have to manage alone. I'm here for you, always" she coos, feeling a lump form in her throat. "You know if I could I would be with you right now. Hard to sleep without you too."
"I know, love" He sighs out, "just.. I just wish I could hold you right now."
"Yeah? Me too baby." In an effort to comfort Harry up she responds, "But you're doing what you love, and that's all that matters."
"You always know how to make me feel better," Harry says, his voice softening. "I wish you were here with me, though. It's lonely on the road."
"I know, Harry, but we'll be together soon. Just a few more weeks, and you'll be back home," Y/N reminds him.
"I hope so," Harry says wistfully. "I just hate being away from you for so long."
"I hate it too, Harry, but we'll get through this," Y/N reassures him. "We always do."
They talk for a while longer, catching up on each other's day. Harry tells her about the cities he's been to, the fans he's met, and the songs he's performed. Y/N listens intently, feeling a mix of pride and longing. She informs Harry of her incident earlier that morning where she stubbed her toe on her way out of the house, which resulted in her dropping and disappointingly breaking her camera.
"What time is it there?" Harry questioned, his voice sounded a bit distant towards the end since he was pulling his phone away from his ear to Google the time back home.
"Uhh not sure, it's late night" Y/N gushes out, hoping to avoid the inevitable of Harry figuring out she should be asleep right now.
There's a moment of silence on both ends. "Y/N! Why didn't you tell me it's past three in the morning??" Harry sternly but still softly spoke.
"Oh is it? I didn't notice" Y/N breathes out with a chuckle.
"Naughty minx."
"Heyyyyy you can't say that when you're like a thousand miles away," she whines out, pout forming on her lips.
A smile appears on Harry's face as he can definitely picture Y/N pursed lips, "I know, too far from you baby, but we'll make it through this. We're stronger than the distance between us."
"Are you quoting song lyrics that you've been writing to me right now?" Y/N probes with a giggle.
"No, no but maybe I'll jot that down." Harry counters back.
As the conversation continues, Y/N can feel herself getting more and more tired. She's been working long hours lately, and the late nights are starting to catch up with her. Harry must sense this, too, because he says, "You sound exhausted, Y/N. You should get some sleep."
"I'm...m'up. I swear."
"This is like the fifth time you've yawned in the past two minutes."
"No you silly boy, that's just me uhhh... breathing" she fires back, not ready for Harry to end the call.
"Some weird breathing you got going on there" Harry retaliates softly. "But really, I don't want to keep you up if you're tired, love. Get some rest and dream of me."
Y/N shuffles laying on her side, putting the call on speaker since it has become uncomfortable holding the phone for so long. "I don't want to hang up, Harry. I want to keep talking to you."
"Okay, we can talk a little longer. But promise me you'll take care of yourself, okay?"
Y/N hums back as a response. "How about you do the talking, talk to me until I sleep please?"
"Anything you want baby, I'd do all this late night talking until mornin' if you wanted"
Y/N feels herself starting to drift off to sleep as Harry talks to her. His voice is soothing, like a lullaby, and she finds herself becoming more relaxed with each passing moment. She doesn't want to fall asleep and miss a single moment of this conversation, but her body is betraying her. She struggles to keep her eyes open, but eventually, she can no longer resist the pull of slumber.
Harry notices the change in her breathing and realizes she's falling asleep. He continues talking to her softly, wanting to help her fall asleep feeling loved and comforted. He whispers sweet nothings and tells her how much he loves her, even though he knows she can't hear him anymore.
