In the afternoon, I go to see my mother and sister. Alex went to see a lawyer and Gloria to deal with the issue of Rufus' sentence.
I went into the flat. My mother was wailing. What happened again. I went into the kitchen. Mother had put the pies in the oven.
"What happened?" I crossed my arms.
"Haven't you heard yet?"
I shook my head.
"Don's a werewolf" She said it as if it were a blatant fact and threw the towel on the table. It hit with a thud.
"And?" The words were out of my mouth before I could comprehend what she'd said. Yes. It's dangerous.
"And? You're really asking what....." she stopped talking. "Sure, how else would you talk."
"How come you only found out now?"
"We were planning the days and when it came to the 30th, he said he was turning." she was disappointed. And took a rag and started wiping down the table.
"Why didn't he just say he was a werewolf in a start?" I asked.
"He thought I knew. No, can you believe it?....."
Helga threw the rag down and sat back in her chair. She thought for a moment.
"And now what?" I asked.
"Nothing... people should be with people!"
"Just like that, yeah?"
"Yes" she was sad.
"Think about it." I went to Meredith's, but she wasn't home. She was out with Nick again.
Mum's best left alone right now. But I honestly don't like Don being a werewolf either. The protector of the disadvantaged in me woke up in the dialogue with Helga, but now I was thinking about it. I mean, he can be fiery, and he's strong. What if Don hits her or bullies her. Or worse. I need to find out as much as I can about Don. He seems like an ordinary, nice man. I remembered Rufus: dressed in a formal SharpWhites suit. Black jacket, off-white shirt, and black skinny trousers, with gleaming leather shoes. With black styled and thick hair, a small spiky beard and a pointy moustache. With blue as ice soulless eyes. He was beautiful. And seemed majestic and noble, but if you looked hard enough you could see evil. Disguised and ruthless. I don't know how Alex saw it, or if Rufus was just pretending to be a simpleton. But Don could be just as creature.
I got a text from Chloe and we met at a street diner. She was having tea.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"I wanted to ask you to go to the witches with me. See if my gift is real."
"Oh, okay. But why not the counting recognizman?"
"There's a month's waiting list. I'd rather check with the witches and finally get some peace of mind." she bit her lip and then said ashamed. "I was also thinking maybe I should become a witch."
I almost choked. Chloe and the witch. She's crazy, and it hurts.
"Chloe, do you want to experience hell?"
"No. But maybe it's for the best. My gift, if I have it, will be stronger, I'll be able to work a normal job, Will."
"Have you talked to Seth about this?"
"No. You don't know him. You're gonna spend money on crap you'd rather buy something important or put it away. You don't have any gift. Don't listen to your quack grandmother, she'll drink and tell you fairy tales." Chloe looked sadly down at the table, quoting our "friend."
