She couldn't fathom what she was hearing. The words pierced her ears like a dagger, leaving her in a state of disbelief.
"What?!" Sarah's voice morphed into a fierce growl, causing heads to turn in her direction, intrigued by the intensity of her reaction.
Within her, a storm brewed as she heard the enunciation of Jason's name. Animosity flooded her veins, igniting a fire of fury that threatened to consume her. How could fate be so remorseless? The mere notion of working alongside him churned her stomach with disbelief. She had harbored thoughts of taking his life, yearning for the opportunity, and now? Now they were to be comrades?
"That would be interesting."
A low chuckle resonated beside her, drawing her attention to Alaric. His lips curled in a twisted smile, a sardonic amusement dancing in his eyes. A single glance was all it took to convey her seething resentment, wishing nothing more than to silence him.
If looks could kill, by now after she turned in his direction, he would lie down stone cold. She just started with the idea of telling him to shut the fuck up, but she got stopped.
"You know, never did I imagine that I would be forced to cooperate with a pitiful excuse for a werewolf such as yourself," a deep voice maliciously cut through the air, too close for comfort. Sarah turned, her eyes meeting Jason's in a fierce deadlock.
Jason stood nonchalantly, merely two steps away, his gaze piercing and filled with clear resentment. Sarah's narrowed eyes suppressed the urge to reveal her fangs in an act of defiance. With a frigid stare, she summoned all the venom within her and retorted, "Well, I never anticipated having to endure the pungency of your presence either, but alas, here we stand."
Without second thoughts, Sarah took a step towards him, her resolve unyielding. "I would rather clash with a rabid wolf than endure a single moment in your despicable company."
A derisive smirk curled upon Jason's lips as he taunted her. "Funny, Sarah, for I was just contemplating the same about you. Though, I daresay even a rabid wolf would be more bearable than your incessant whining."
Sarah's nostrils flared as her anger spiked, her control wavering.
"We shall see," Sarah vowed through gritted teeth.
Eva interjected, her voice laced with a warning tone. "Save your confrontations for the battlefield, both of you. We won't allow personal vendettas to jeopardize our chances."
Reluctantly, Sarah tore her gaze away from Jason and directed her attention to the rest of the team. The embers of resentment still burned within her, but she understood the necessity of suppressing it for the greater good.
Even if it pain her a lot.
"Very well," she muttered through gritted teeth, her voice laced with a simmering fury.
The air crackled with an undeniable tension, as if it were charged with the potential for explosive violence at any given moment. Yet, amidst the seething hostility, a begrudging truce slowly emerged, born out of the necessity of their shared mission.
With the team's attention turned towards the names of their rival participants, Sarah and Jason exchanged one final dagger-filled glance. It was clear that their desire to vanquish each other swiftly burned with an intensity matched only by their determination. Alas, their lethal confrontation would have to wait.
Not in this trial, at least.
Oh, the bitter taste of frustration that consumed them both.
After the team members had been carefully selected, Elder Alpha rose to his feet once again, his commanding presence enveloping the gathered werewolves. The air crackled with nervous anticipation as families and pack members anxiously awaited what was to come.
