Broken soul
Damaged mind
A hollow vessel
Born of flesh
Molded to withstand pain
Tasked with freeing the unworthyIt was around midnight when I arrived at the entrance of the community. I stood under the street light, my mask and axe in hand. To my left was the sign of the community.
'Crowheart Homes'
The thought of what I could achieve here made me grin. Sliding my mask on I took a deep breath and looked to my left and to my right, trying to decide on the first house. Ultimately, I decided on the left house but when I took my first step...he stopped me.
"Not yet. Leave this one for last."
"Why?" I asked him, but unsurprisingly...I didn't receive an answer. Only the static. That damn static. Disregarding it, I walked towards the house on the right, and soon the static slowly faded. I approached wooden steps and made my way up them, getting to the door. I landed three slow but heavy knocks on the door, surely to get someone's attention. The door opened and in front of me stood a woman, she was shorter than me but I was always taller than most people.
She didn't seem to notice me at first, for some reason that...angered me. But I knew what the voice would say. 'Stay calm...enjoy the moment.' A bunch of bull—
"What the?!" I couldn't even finish my own thought as she looked at me in horror. She attempted to run and when she did, I understood her plan.
'Move fast enough to get to the phone'
I wanted to laugh but I knew I couldn't, I didn't want to hear that static again. She rushed towards the house phone that was on a living room table, before she could, I grabbed her by her hair and pulled her to the ground. And, with a swift swing of my axe, I lodged it into her neck.
From upstairs, I could hear a man's voice call out for the woman.
"Honey? You down there?"
As he came around the corner, he looked in horror as his loving wife laid on the ground, bleeding out. He then ran off, and I could hear a room door being slammed and locked. I removed my axe from her neck and walked up the steps slowly. Once I got upstairs, I was faced with 3 doors. All closed.
'He had to be behind one of these.' I thought to myself.
I kicked one door open, sending it flying off the hinges. I was faced with the man cowering in front of his children. It was then when I was faced with a difficult challenge. Let the children live or free them along with their parents. Living with that pain may give them purpose. Or it may break them. It'd be better to release them from this world.
Tightening my grip on the axe, I took a huge swing and in one clean hit, I managed to cut off the head of the man. The headless corpse fell to the ground next to the severed head. I then approached the kids next,
As one cried hard the other looked at me with determination.
I felt myself filling up with admiration. I almost wanted to let him live...almost...
Raising my axe, I lodged it in the head of the crying child. I then pulled the axe out and me and the determined child watched as the lifeless body of the child fell to the floor.
Lastly, I grabbed the child by the throat and began to squeeze. Slowly over time I applied more pressure until I heard a small crack. The first family of my quest to redeem these unworthy souls and free them from this painful world.
Exiting the home, I approached the next house. I landed three heavy knocks and awaited the person to answer.
"Who is it?" Someone asked. It was a raspy voice, clearly an older man. Rolling my eyes, I kicked the door in. This time with slightly less force. As I did, the old man fell to the ground and when he did, I heard a crack and he screamed in pain. He started to slowly scoot back, the fear in his face only satisfied me more. I didn't want him dead, he was only an old man. But I may have been doing him a favor. Stepping back slightly I aimed my foot and kicked the elderly man in the face hard.
The blood...oh the blood...
I watched as he attempted to hold his broken jaw in place.
Finish him. The voice demanded.
Walking over to the man, I stood over him and stomped on his head. Then again. And again. And again. I must've done it about 50 times. Leaving nothing but a shattered skull, blood, and brains. With a relieving sigh, I turned to leave but stopped when I saw a family photo. I wondered if anyone else was in the house but I couldn't be certain. I gripped my axe tight and crept up the steps, one by one. Soon I heard a voice call out,
"Grandpa?" It sounded like a young man. Turning the corner, he and I made eye contact. The fear from him was more than immense.
He turned to run, and he was fast. But I was faster.
Throwing my axe hard, it was lodged into his skull. His body fell to the ground and blood poured from his wound. I approached him and ripped the axe out. It was then when I got a brilliant idea. With a swift chop, I planted my axe in his neck. Grabbing a hold of his hair, I raised his head into the air and threw it down the steps. I removed my axe and went down the steps. Grabbing the severed head I brought it into the kitchen and grabbed a large knife. I took the head and knife to a nearby wall and pinned the head to it.
"Perfect."
You're wasting time.
I nodded to what the voice said and exited the home.
One by one I went through the neighborhood. Killing everyone. Man, woman, child...it didn't matter. Throughout my journey, the voice often chimed in, mostly to push me along. It rushed me...
And I couldn't do anything about it.
The last house was the very one I wanted to start with. I finally reached my goal.
I went through 31 houses, all filled with families. And now it was time to end this. I landed three heavy knocks on the door, it was time to finish my long night.
Awaiting the door to open, or to even hear someone acknowledge my presence, I felt my heart begin to race. Why was I feeling...nervousness? Or was it anticipation? I couldn't tell the difference at the time. I did eliminate fear as a factor. Why would I be scared of anything?
As I thought about this more, I heard footsteps approaching. The door opened, slightly with the chain stopping it. The tired woman who opened it looked at me in utter horror. As fast as she could, she tried to slam the door closed but I kicked it all the way open before that could happen. Like the first woman I killed, she ran off, but was oddly quicker. As she reached the kitchen, she withdrew a pistol and aimed it at me.
Before I could take at least one step, the gun went off,
BANG! BANG! BANG!
It instantly became hard to breathe. I stumbled back and felt my chest. Looking at my hand, the blood shocked me. Looking back at the woman, she fired six more shots before I collapsed to the ground, where she then put in five more. I tried to breathe. I tried to hang on. But I felt myself slipping away.
I felt...cold.
I had never felt the cold embrace of death. I pondered to myself. 'Was this my punishment?' I thought I was protected by the voice. I thought myself to be untouchable. Yet...here I am. Dying.
The woman aimed her smoking gun at me and as I closed my eyes. That was the last thing I saw.
No. You're not done yet.
Minutes had gone by and my eyes opened quickly. Jumping to my feet, I grabbed my axe and swiftly chopped the woman in her side. She fell to the ground yelling in pain and I did it again and again and again until...she was in two pieces.
Make an example of her.
"With pleasure." Grabbing her two body parts I looked at the kitchen then at the living room. With a smile behind my bloody mask, I enacted my plan.
Once I was done, I headed upstairs, searching the house for anyone else. Sadly, there was no one else, but regardless, it was time to make my exit. Limping out of the house I felt my chest and looked at my hand.
No blood.
You're welcome. Don't let that happen again.
I gave a slight nod and exited the community and made my way home. And as I walked, I thought about the work I did in just one night.
I wonder what was next.
