The city of Houston was in literal shambles about Michelle's sudden death, some believed she was present at the wrong place at the wrong time and others believed that her murder was intentional.

Confused because it happened so sudden.
Hurt because Michelle was loved deeply by her town.
Anger because Salem lacked emotion about it.
Rumors were already spreading that he was the reason she wasn't present anymore, it was now a well known fact that Vanity and Salem were together and people thought that was the reason why Michelle's life was taken.
They weren't exactly right, but they weren't wrong either.
Salem didn't know how to feel about Michelle at the moment. On one hand he missed how their relationship used to be, when they were in love and only focused on each other.
On the other hand, after it was revealed to him that Michelle was planning on going against him and telling the Police about his actions it influenced him to commit the crime of cutting her life short.
