I awoke by the sound of my alarm. Silence. I looked around, confused as to what time it was. It was so silent I could hear my heart pounding in my chest, and it was beginning to hurt. I hurled myself up and grabbed my phone and checked the time. 4:32. Oh damn, mum was back. Why hasn't she came into my room? I pushed myself up from my bed and tip toed to my door which was fully closed. I began to open it as my phone started to ring almost violently. I darted over and answered it.
"Hello?"
"Is this Jennifer?" A strange voice muttered.
"Yes, who is this?" I reply, heart pounding.
"You need to -"
Suddenly the power went out, and the line went dead. Who was that? What where they about to say? I decided not to worry about it, probably one of my friends being stupid. I tip toed back to the door and slowly opened it.
"Mum?" I shouted.
No reply, why wasn't she home?
'Ugh, don't be stupid' I thought, 'she's probably just late or held back by something at work or stuck in traffic.'
I glanced into the living room and walked into it. The silence was killing me. I lay down on the couch and flicked the TV on. Some stupid advertisements came on for a while until the TV show 'The Walking Dead' came on. It was my favourite show of all time and I was absolutely obsessed with it. I loved the special effects and I always wondered what it was like to be part of a movie, and I always wanted to be an actress. What would happen if a zombie apocalypse happened? I bet I could survive a long time. Thoughts took over my mind and I slowly began to drift off into sleep.

Suddenly I woke up. Why did I keep falling asleep? That was so unusual. I would never be able to sleep for hours like what I just did there. I checked the time on the TV. 8.52. Well then, clearly mum wasn't coming home any time soon. Just to be sure I shouted her name, but there was still no reply; just the eerie silence.
"I'm 16, 17 next year, I should be able to take care of myself. Don't freak out' I repeated in my mind to try and calm myself. I got up from the couch and wandered through to the kitchen. I opened every single cupboard until I found something I could eat. My stomach was growling at me. I grabbed some waffles and Nutella. I got out a knife and a plate and began to spread the Nutella onto my waffles. The sight of the food made my stomach growl even more. I walked through to the living room and sat on the couch, scoffing my waffles.
I tried flicking the TV on, but for some strange reason the TV would go on for about 2 seconds, flicker, and then switch off. Ugh, we've had this stupid TV for about 5 years. No wonder it's rubbish. I glanced over to my house phone, reached for it and dialled my mums work phone number. Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep. Beeeeeeeeeep. This continued for about 15 seconds and the line went dead. What was going on? Heart racing, I ran over to the window and looked out into the cold, wet street. No one was walking, and the street lights were off. What the hell?
