song: changes by david bowie

THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS HAD STARTED, but that didn't mean much to Charlotte anymore. She spent her days locked inside, watching the telly or listening to Remus's record player.

Since she could remember, David Bowie had been something she idolized. It was always playing in the background. Remus would tell her that the first word she spoke, after Dad and Moony, had been Bowie, it made the girl love the singer even more.

Charlotte screamed and danced her heart out as Changes by David Bowie was blasted in the background of their living room, she was jumping off and on the leathered sofa, singing into her hairbrush and using it as a microphone.

Just then, the doorknob twisted, and someone appeared inside. Charlotte knew Remus was coming today, but she had ignored the thought, making it disappear completely.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes (turn and face the strange)

Ch-ch changes don't wanna be a richer man.

Remus faked a cough, making the girl turn around immediately, wand in hand, only to see her godfather grinning at her. "Looks like someone's having all the fun without me." the older man leaned on the door frame, crossing his arms as if expecting something.

"If you're expecting some big welcome, save it." Charlotte's words were sharp and filled with anger. The young girl turned the record player off and went to help her godfather with his things. Even angry, she knew that the full moon had taken a toll on her only relative.

They sat in silence all through dinner. Charlotte cleaned the table and washed the dishes, knowing her guardian did not need the extra work after a full moon.

She finished her work and went through the living room, her eyes falling on Remus, who was carefully examining something on the leathered sofa.

"Charlotte, I know you are angry with me." Her father figure stated, picking up the thing he was examining and turning around to face the girl. "But a letter to me about your mass murderer of a father leaving presents for you should have crossed your mind!" He raised the black dog plush toy, his face a mix of hurt and betrayal. Charlotte couldn't tell if it was because of her or her father.

"Didn't know you cared enough after standing by and letting them throw me out of school for a thing I can't control!" Charlotte's anger came to the surface, and she hated it, she hated arguing with Remus after everything they'd been through.

"Didn't think I cared enough?" her guardian's voice was laced with disbelief. "You're my daughter, of course I care." the words came out of his mouth before he could stop them. He had never referred to Charlotte as his daughter.

"No, I am not!" the dark-haired girl regretted her words after she saw her godfather's hurtful expression.

Charlotte darted towards Remus, snatched the plush toy out of his hands, and ran towards her bedroom, loudly shutting the door behind her.

The girl went to lie down on her bed, her eyes burning into the ones of the plush toys. She hated the way she had acted, as if Remus hadn't raised her, taught her everything from how to draw to how to fly. He was more of a father than a mass murderer could ever be, but somehow, she couldn't bring herself ever to consider Remus her real father.

Slowly, her eyelids drifted down, weighed by all the sadness overwhelming her. Charlotte brought the black dog closer to her chest, exhaling as she pictured a happy little kid with the same dark hair running around the house with the black dog plush toy in her small hands.

The sunlight crept inside Charlotte's room, and the busy London streets could be heard outside the window.

The girl's eyes fluttered open, and she groaned once the sun flashed right into her eyes. Bringing the plush toy on her face to cover her eyes,  the dark-haired girl sighed deeply.

Someone had tucked her into bed last night, that someone being Remus. Charlotte knew she had to apologize to him.

The young girl quietly made her way to the kitchen, took out all of the ingredients from the fridge, and started making some breakfast. She knew the way to Remus's heart was through his stomach, that man could not be fed enough, especially after a full moon.

In a mere 30 minutes, pancakes, bacon and eggs, and coffee were made and laid down on the dinner table.  Soon after, Charlotte heard the door of Remus's bedroom open, and footsteps made their way to the kitchen.

"What smells so delicious here?" half asleep, the older professor stood by the door frame, a small smile on his lips as he clapped his hands, looking at the table excitedly. "Didn't know you could cook." he joked.

Charlotte couldn't help but smile at the sight in front of her. Her godfather was wearing his signature "grandpa sweater," paired with pajama pants. His hair was messy as he ran his hand through it, and scars were visible across his forehead, making the younger girl feel uncomfortable at how rude she had been yesterday.

"I cook...sometimes." Charlotte crossed her arms, sitting down at the table across from her guardian, a guilty look on her face because she didn't know what to say.

"I wanted to apologize-" Before she could begin, Remus stopped her, grabbing her hand across the table and placing it on his.

"You have nothing to apologize for. I called you my daughter, and you are not, it's as clear as that." Remus put on his charming smile, one that Charlotte could not resist at all. It made her just want to go and hug him, which is exactly what she did.

"Thank you." she squeezed him as tight as she could. "And I'm sorry I didn't tell you about the plush toy, it was very irresponsible of me." after a second, Charlotte let go and looked at the godfather, his chocolate eyes warming into her grey ones.

"You have to understand that you are in danger, Sirius is dangerous, even if he gifts you plush toys." Remus tried to sound serious, but the last part made Charlotte chuckle. Her mass murderer of a dad gifted her a toy. It was rather hilarious.

"I just don't understand why he'd do such a thing if he is evil and dangerous, as you say." It would be a lie if the girl denied that this exact question had been bothering her ever since the gift came. A few months back, if Charlotte had received such a present, the thought of her dad reaching out would comfort her, now it just put the girl at more unease.

"Me neither, Charlie." Remus let out, stroking Charlotte's head as he slid deep into thoughts. Even after all this time, Sirius still found a way to surprise him.

Charlotte went back to finish her breakfast, it was quite fantastic, even she was proud of herself. The two slid back into their normal routine, complaining about the loud train that they lived nearby and discussing new topics for Remus's class.

"Oh, I almost forgot to mention!" Remus perked up, rising from his chair and limping towards his bedroom. Once he came back, he had a letter clenched in his hands, one with the Hogwarts emblem on it. "You're going back to Hogwarts, dear."
