I crept into the office at 9:32am. Thirty two minutes late. Looking on the bright side, it wasn't the latest I'd ever been so I had that going for me.

The room was crowded with people rushing to meet deadlines and the chief's office was empty. I caught Mel's eye and she bobbed her head to hurry, the coast was clear. I felt like a secret agent weaving between the maze of desks and finally finding safety in my chair as I shoved my bag under the desk and adjusted my mop of hair. Like that was going to salvage anything.

Mel passed over a mirror and I could see the true damage the weather had done.

"Jesus Lena, did you empty a bucket over your head?" She laughed but I was far from amused. I used some tissue to wipe away the majority of the leaking mascara but unless I stood under the bathroom dryer for the next hour I was stuck with soaking hair.

I dragged it back into a ponytail, trying out a new slicked back hairstyle if anyone asked, and cleaned up the now wet desk.

"What did I miss?"

"Not a lot, only the new chief addressing the whole office and asking why you weren't here..."

"You're lying."

"I'm not. He's having one on one meetings with the whole team this afternoon to discuss targets and yadda yadda. You got bumped to the bottom of the list when he saw you weren't in yet."

"What time is that? Mia has an art class after school." Panic set in, I'd never missed a single class, recital, anything she had an interest in for the short period of time it lasted. I wasn't about to start now.

"Four. And he's cancelled all time off, something about time management and boosting profits. He's got the whole office in a mood."

Hell no, that time was approved. He couldn't just take it away and expect us all to jump when he asked.

"Where is he?"

"In the copy room. Lena, don't go getting yourself into trouble!" Her voice trailed off as I was already halfway across the room. I'd give that uptight asshole a piece of my mind. I was good at my job, better than the rest of the team and that wasn't ego talking. It reflected in every target I exceeded and my client management and I'd tell him exactly that.
