After Monday's meeting, and my walking out on it, I'd been walking on eggshells around Luke. His name made me unreasonably angry. Luke Walker. 'Can I get you anything, Mr Walker?' 'I put those reports on your desk, Mr Walker.'

I wasn't ashamed to admit I'd done some digging online. Youngest editor in chief in history at his previous company. He also wrote his own books that had amassed a few awards, even volunteered at an animal shelter. The pictures were cute to my dismay. The dogs, not him.

Every bit of information I found out just annoyed me more, he sounded perfect on paper so why was he so uptight and strict here?! Each day that passed I came to notice a lot of his attention was focused on me and not in a good way.

Everyone else got gracious smiles and words of encouragement, I got heavy sighs and reluctance to even speak. It only fuelled the fire to act out, I carried on doing my job just as well as I had before but I made sure to point out each and every one of his mistakes. Misspelt name on an email, taking a minute too long at lunch, petty things.

I felt like I was slowly one upping him and eventually he'd have to give up. Treat me with the respect that he expected from me. I wouldn't be the first to give in.

"Miss Monroe, did you finish that—"

"It's on your desk already." Open your eyes, asshole.

I watched him go back into the office and immediately find it on top of the stack of papers he hadn't been through yet.

"You don't have to be so mean to him, y'know." Mel chimed in from the next desk.

"That wasn't mean, he hadn't even looked and was hoping to catch me out."

"He isn't out to get you, Lena. Everyone knows you work the hardest, he just expects more of you than anyone else."

"Mel, he audibly tutted at me the other day because the email that I'd scheduled didn't send on time. How is the slow internet my problem now?"
