Senku hears a low sigh from you and pauses his notations, looking up at you. He sees you looking longingly at the couple as they walk away, entwined in each other's arms. He knew what you were thinking.
Senku had no interest in romance. It was a means for humans to increase their chances for reproduction. A mating ritual. However, he recognized that others, like you for example, thought of it more as an emotional bonding experience; a way to feel closer to your partner.
Despite this knowledge, Senku still found it difficult to express grand gestures like he saw in passing on TV commercials. He knew it was all fake, but media has an effect on culture at large, on you. He found it frivolous to create a fantasy for you when he could share his joy of science and discovery with you instead. That was real. That was him.
However, Senku was still sensitive to your personal needs. He had developed multiple devices to alleviate your frustrations, and while they were successful at doing their designated jobs--proven by the noises he would hear you making late at night while he worked (he would always grin smugly to himself at his success)-- he knew it was not entirely what you wanted. He knew you wanted him to be personally involved.
He wasn't opposed or repulsed by the idea. He just didn't think about it. And he realized that might make it feel like he didn't think about you, which was the furthest from the truth.
Senku had confessed his love for you on the day he asked you to move in with him. He didn't exactly say "I love you, please live with me," but he was certain he had made his intentions clear by proclaiming the two of you should work together more closely. Perhaps he had been wrong and should have used more traditional romantic gestures. What a pain.
Seeing your longing eyes stung his heart. He wanted to make sure you felt loved and wanted by him, always. He opens himself up for a hug, clearing his throat awkwardly to get your attention. You shuffle toward him shyly. He wraps his arms around you when you step closer, making sure you are snug against his chest. He leans in to whisper in your ear.
"Why do you insist on staying by my side? There are plenty of others who could easily meet your needs better than I. It wouldn't bother me in the least if you found comfort in someone else's arms. I'm not a jealous guy, at least not in the romantic sense. You know that, right?"
You squeeze him, "I know, Senku. But it wouldn't be you. I choose to stand by you because I love you. I wouldn't have it any other way."
Senku snorts, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, "That's ridiculous."
