Miguel
"Can we go back?" Venom asks with a mouthful of chocolate.
He's standing over my shoulder while I sit at my desk, his hip pressed against my shoulder so the rest of his leg disappears inside me. The snapping of his teeth as he shovels chocolate into his mouth sets my nerves on edge.
"No. We can't go back. We wait for her to call." I glance up at him from my computer. "I thought you knew everything about humans? That would include dating rituals."
A cool, feminine voice says through the computer speaker, "There are six hundred, twenty-five thousand, seven hundred and ninety-two romance novels with themes of stalking."
"Thank you, Lyla," I grumble through gritted teeth.
Venom grins. "See? They like it."
"It's fiction! Lyla, can you please focus on finding more ex Alchemax test subjects?"
"I can multitask," she says cooly.
Venom chomps on chocolate while Lyla opens a few dozen tabs on the browser. The same weight I've carried for years settles back onto my shoulders. It's marginally less heavy now that I have someone to share it with, even though it's an alien with less than admirable morals.
It's been years, but the personal responsibility I carry hasn't gone away. In fact, the more obituaries I read, the worse it gets. And with Drake out of the way, and Venom and I at an understanding, I can finally refocus my efforts on rectifying my past.
"What if she's thinking about your pretty spiderman body?"
Venom's voice is like nails on a chalkboard right now. Because he knows the truth of it. Every thought I've had since forcing myself to leave the shop hours ago has been about her. What she thought, if I scared her off, what she means by 'I don't date', how her touch sparked life back inside me. It's even gone to darker places, much to my displeasure. Thoughts of both smooth skin and tendrils. A Long slimy tongue and how it would look wrapped around her-
My body jerks outside of my control as Venom says, "that's it. We're going."
My entire being is suddenly enveloped in inky black. Watching through Venom's eyes, I see the desk recede as he stands up and turns to the window.
"Venom, stop! I wanted to do this right! We shouldn't spy on her!"
"Then close your eyes."
Storm clouds swirl above, but it's not dark enough for Venom to be this reckless. Rooftops fly under his feet. My muscles strain with the effort to push against him.
"Why can't you wait for her to call?! She doesn't even want you! She wants me!"
He growls, and his slick darkness surrounds me tighter. "I will see if she is trustworthy, then she'll fall in love with me."
"Oh, please," I grumble, struggling to fight against his hold on me as he leaps between buildings and scales brick walls. "Venom!!"
Finally, while he's bounding across a rooftop, I push through his feet. With all my effort, I force them to stop, and Venom trips. We tumble and stumble, landing hard on the floor of the roof.
"Miguel!" He growls.
The tension between us heightens as he shoves me back inside and I fight tooth and nail for control. "I want to do this right! You might be thousands of years old, but I only have one short life."
He forces us to our feet and pushes off the edge of the roof to clear the street below between buildings. I keep tugging against his power, even as rain splatters the rooftops and make them slick. I don't mind a broken bone, Venom can fix it in seconds.
