He'd known he wasn't like his siblings for as long as he could remember.
He was never as impulsive as them, going on a bunch of adventures without a plan. He'd rather go on a planned hike or just stay at home.
He never got friends as easy as his siblings, often being pushed onto his siblings and their friends by their parents. They, of course, didn't mean any harm, they just wanted their son to play with other children, but his siblings wanted to hang out with their friends without a sibling.
He never found it cool that his dad was arguably the most famous wizard alive, which it seemed like everyone else did. He always saw how much stress it seemed to put his dad and his aunts, uncles and grandparents through.
He was more observant then his peers. He noticed when something was wrong before others, such as all the adults in his life seemed to be sad on his cousin Victoire's birthday, but seemed to hide it from the kids. He now knew why they were sad, but his parents hadn't yet told him. They wanted to wait til' he was 10.
And because he was so different it didn't really come as a surprise to him when he was called weird for not liking girls. But why would he? They had cooties and he didn't want any of those. He didn't understand how people his age were talking about wanting to have a wife when they grew up, if just didn't seem fun. He couldn't even imagine it.
It wasn't until a year later, when he finally was 10, that he first thought about a husband instead. He didn't hate the idea, like he had the thought of a wife. He didn't tell anyone because he was a boy. Boys like girls. That's just how it is. He's a boy so he can't like boys. He pushed his feelings back until another few years later. At eleven he got his Hogwarts letter. He was already different from everyone else and was really scared about not ending up in Gryffindor. He kept that inside as well, at least until he got to platform nine and three quarters. Then his dad told him that he was named after two headmasters at Hogwarts, one of them being a Slytherin that was the bravest man he ever knew. It did calm him down a bit but honestly man, couldn't you have told him that earlier!? Also he now had another reason to feel different, his siblings were named after parental figures or friends, people his parents loved, and he was named after two principals! Later that day his fear came true, he was placed in Slytherin. Everyone in the hall was whispering when his named was called and we're just so shocked when his house was called. He felt humiliated and like a disappointment.
When he got to his dorm he found out he was sharing with Scorpius Malfoy. He assumed he'd be with at least two more people but apparently not. They became friends immediately. They talked for hours, well into the night. They eventually fell asleep. Their first lesson was herbology of all classes. They were of course late because they overslept. Luckily his godfather Neville, or as he was now supposed to call him, profesor Longbottom, was very forgiving and just took one point each, and they earned that back five times throughout the lesson.
Throughout first year they became closer and closer. Scorpius helped him deal with feeling like an outsider, and Albus helped him too. They told each other everything, expect that Albus felt like he liked a boy in second year. It was probably just a phase anyways.
When summer came they were sad to not get to see each other for so long. Both of them were happy to see their parents and the rest of their relatives again. Albus parents were incredibly happy that he had such a good friend, but his uncle didn't like who the friend was, but after a bit of persuading he was okay with it. Scorpius wasn't his dad after all. Albus and Scorpius wrote to each other every day. They couldn't wait to see each other again.
September first 2018 rolled around. Albus thought he wouldn't like going to the platform because of everyone idolizing his dad, but he only felt excitement to go back. As soon as they got to the platform Albus wanted to run and find Scorpius, but he didn't because he wouldn't see his parents or little sister until Christmas. He said bye to them and then he ran off to find his best friend. He saw him running around looking for him too, and they ran too hug each other. When they pulled away and looked at each other Albus felt something. Now he realized that he realized a long time ago. He came out to himself. He was gay. And he liked Scorpius Malfoy. Why did it have to be a Malfoy of all families? His uncle Ron hated Scorpius dad and the rest of his family disliked him. But back to the gay thing! That explained his obsession with the Brazilian Chaser Gonçalo Flores in 2014. And why he always wanted to be with the neighbors boy. They went onto the train and found an empty compartment to sit in.
"Hey Scorpius. Um... there's something I wanna tell you." He said.
"There's something I really wanna tell you too." Scorpius responded.
"Really?" He said.
"Yeah. At the same time?" Scorpius suggested.
"Sure" Albus said. He was terrified. Why did he decide to do this?
"1" Scorpius started.
"2" He continued.
"3" Scorpius finished.
"I'm gay. Don't worry, I don't have a crush on you." Scorpius said at the same time as Albus said "I'm gay and I don't want you to think any differently of me." Then they both said "Oh" before starting to laugh. Little did they know that both of them were lying, Scorpius did have a little crush on Albus, and Albus wanted him to think of him differently, as if he was boyfriend material.
"Godric I was so scared to tell you. I guess that was stupid" Albus said. He was a bit hurt that Scorpius said he didn't have a crush on him, but that was okay.
"Yeah, I was too. But you didn't have to be. I will always be here for you and never judge you no matter what okay? You can tell me whatever." Scorpius said.
"I know. You can too." Albus responded.
They would both stop having a crush on each other after a while and start talking about boys with each other, Albus finally telling him about that crush he used to have on a (now) third year. Scorpius got a secret Hufflepuff boyfriend at the end of second year but they broke up over owl post only a month into the summer. Albus had a secret Ravenclaw boyfriend for eight months during third year, who he shared his first kiss with after a Hogsmeade trip, but they didn't last.
It would take til' middle of fourth year for Albus and Scorpius's old feelings to creep back and for them to get together.
