Chapter 01,

First Impressions

UPDATED: July 30th

Finnick could still remember the first time he saw Seraphina. They were both about 10 at the time and she was sat at her lunch table eating, when a group of older guys came up to Finnick.

It was normal behavior from them to make fun of Finnick. He was the best kid of his age at the trident and even better than some of the older boys so of course they started making fun of him. They had a lot of material to do so, all they had to do was mention his dead parents to get Finnick angry.

Seraphina had stopped eating to watch. She wanted to say something, to do something, she really did. But they were so much older than her and she knew that if she got in a physical altercation with boys older than her that her mother would have her hung. She had tried to stop them once.

She had overheard them making fun of him while he was oblivious keeping his focus on training, so she walked up to them. Bad idea. They simply pushed her to the ground, pouring their milk carton over her head before getting up again to walk towards Finnick. It was one of many failed attempts. This one ending in scraped hands and soggy hair. One of the better punishments.

This time around she had to be smarter. She couldn't snitch, knowing that if she did her and Finnick would both get the blame. And she didn't exactly have a physical advantage. So instead she stayed still and watched, noticing small things like the fact it was the same boy every time with a different group of people. Danny Welfare, mayors son.

She had never liked Danny, in fact she hated him. Which told a lot because she didn't like using the word hate for anyone.

When she was only 5 she had brought in a pet butterfly for show and tell. Some kids were afraid so she had it in a safe box (even spent all night poking holes in the top).

Danny of course said he wasn't scared but when he took it out of the box he dropped it, clearly terrified, and stepped on it. He was never punished, he was the mayors son so he did no wrong. Instead she was the one who got a warning not to bring things that could disrupt other students.

She stared at Danny who kept taunting the boy and for a glimpse second the two made eye contact. His sad green eyes melting into her grey ones. He noticed how pretty she was. Curly blonde hair and shining eyes. The admiration disappeared when he saw how her eyes held pity. He hated that she saw him like that, like he was weak. As soon as their eyes met she broke it, looking back down to her tray of food. He couldn't help but notice the small smirk displayed on her lips.
