You were in the wrong place at the wrong time. That would probably go on your tombstone. In fact, you felt like it might as well have been printed on your birth certificate. 'Born in the wrong place, at the wrong time.' You longed to be from an older time, when there was still a lawless frontier in America. But no, you had to be born in this day and age where criminal activity was much, much harder.
The Chinese man from Gao's heroin gang handed you the package. You tucked it discreetly under your leather jacket. He held a machine gun in his other arm, pointed to the sky.
"Don't speak to anyone." He said in his limited English.
Your eyes narrowed at the man, ten years younger than you and in no position to order you around. But he didn't know that. He didn't know that you were actually a spy for Martin Li. The world knew him as a generous philanthropist, but he had another agenda as well. Your real task wasn't to deliver the package, but to find a weakness in this gang's hideout. It was a mission you had already accomplished, and now this drug deal was just a cover.
"Wouldn't dream of it." You said with a sinful smirk.
Instead of your criminal activities concluding without a hitch, that damn devil showed up. They called him the Devil of Hell's Kitchen or 'Daredevil'. Another masked, New York based superhero. You thought of him more like the cops. You saw him on the rooftop before the Chinese man did and sprinted down the rainy back alley.
Behind you, you heard the man getting beaten up by Daredevil. There were no shots fired, the guy must have been taken completely by surprise. You looked back as you ran, only to see the guy unconscious on the street, and no Daredevil in sight.
Daredevil jumped down from a fire escape and landed right in front of you. You stopped just short of running into him. "I give up!" You said and put your hands up before you could even catch your breath. You backed up a few steps. You didn't want to fight; you knew it was pointless. You would just get beaten to the ground and then wake up in jail. And if you were going to go to jail anyway, you might as well not suffer from a broken bone while you were in there.
Daredevil tilted his head slightly. He seemed to stare at you, but you couldn't see his eyes through the red-tinted lenses on his mask. You kept your hands raised. You insisted, "Take the package. It's fine, just take it. I don't care."
Daredevil stepped closer, right up in front of you now. His red armor shined a little in the moonlight.
You started to lower your hands to get the package from your jacket, but his voice stopped you. "Don't move."
You put your hands back up in surrender. "Alright. Whatever you want."
Daredevil slowly felt around your jacket and found the package. "Tell me what it is."
"It's heroin. From that idiot's gang. Just take it, I don't care. It's not like I'm using."
Daredevil opened it a little bit and sniffed it to confirm its contents. There was something very different about him. The way he then walked past you was almost like he was walking in the dark.
"You stay right there. You try to run, and I'll catch you." His calm but stern voice warned.
"Yeah, I know." You sighed. This was not how you wanted this night to go. Wrong place, wrong time.
Daredevil put the package of heroin on the unconscious Chinese man and found a cell phone in his jacket. He used the phone to call 911 and then tossed it on the man's chest.
He went back over to you.
"You call the police....?" You asked him as he just seemingly stared at you.
"Yes. But you're coming with me."
You puzzled, not sure if you cared for that idea or not.
"Give me your gun."
"Who says I have a gun?" You shrugged.
"The smell of metal and oil coming from your waist. Give it to me."
You furrowed your brow. "You expect me to believe that you can smell a gun on me?"
He held out his hand and waited.
"Fine."
You took your gun out of your belt and handed it to him.
"You're a lot more cooperative than most people I deal with."
"Yeah well, call me a pessimist, but I just know when I'm beat."
Daredevil actually smiled a little. You couldn't help but think that he looked very handsome, based on his strong jaw and contrastingly warm smile anyway. He was smiling warmly at your comment, not vindictively like you would have expected.
He tossed your gun down the alley. Then he suddenly picked you up over his shoulder like a rag doll and ran with you.
"What the hell!" You protested.
"Shut up. Or I'll let the police find you." He growled.
That shut you right up.
Police sirens wailed, headed towards the alley.
You held on for dear life as he sprinted. He climbed up a fire escape with you in tow like you weighed nothing.
Daredevil reached the rooftop and lifted you off his shoulder. He steadied you on your feet.
"Follow me. Or get arrested. Your choice."
You followed him to a door. He unlocked it with a code and then led you down some stairs. You entered what looked like a very dark, brick walled apartment. The moonlight beaming through the large windows was the only light you could see by. He charged through the apartment like it didn't matter. You guessed that it might be his own apartment if he knew the layout so well that he could maneuver through it without stumbling into something in the dark.
"Sit on the couch. You're safe here."
You swallowed thickly. "Um...where is the couch? I can't find it."
His silhouette paused, then as if a light bulb went off in his mind, he said, "Oh. Right." He flipped on the dim lights.
The couch was revealed.
"....Thanks." You sat down warily on the couch. "I take it this is your place?"
"I'll ask the questions tonight Miss Y/N." He said sternly while he poured himself a glass of water in the kitchen.
"How the hell do you know my name?"
"That's another question." He remarked before taking a sip of water. "Who's asking those again?"
You sighed, equal parts defeated and annoyed. "You are."
"That's right."
He put his water down and walked slowly around the counter and over to the living area. He sat down on the couch across from you.
You longed to see the rest of his face.
"Why were you spying on the Chinese?" he asked.
You gathered your remaining courage. "I'm not confessing anything to a masked vigilante. You want me to talk, then take off the mask."
He paused, considering. You had dared him. He was no coward.
