Lenore hooked two fingers around her bag and picked it up, letting it dangle over her shoulder. For the fifth time, she was going away to Hogwarts, and her parents weren't happy about it. She'd always been sheltered, but since she was gone for most of the year they tightened their hold on Lenore and her life when they did see her. This meant that everything she did was monitored. Even now, walking through King's Cross, they were stationed at her sides like wimpy bodyguards.
Her father linked his arm in Lenore's and stepped through the brick wall with her. Lenore's mother came through last, her eyes darting about frantically.
They said their good-byes, which took as long as Lenore's parents could make it last. The weary girl boarded the Hogwarts Express at the last moment, just as the other students made their way to their compartments. A grin slowly spread across Lenore's face. She stood there like an idiot, just waiting for the corridor to empty. This was the first time in months where she could go wherever she wanted, do whatever she wanted, without someone keeping an eye on her.
Why? Isn't that the question. Why were her parents so unwilling to let her go anywhere on her own? Lenore's mother even quit her summer job so that she could stay at home and stare at her daughter. There was hardly a moment in which Lenore wasn't being watched- at least until she boarded the train and went back home. Hogwarts, not Number 3 Privet Drive, was her home.
When the corridor finally cleared, Lenore started walking the length of the train. Nearly every compartment was full.
