As the first light of dawn began to filter through the windows of Eclipsed Brews, Cleo arrived at the coffee shop, ready to start another day. However, to her surprise, she found the doors still locked, the familiar sign announcing the shop's opening hours conspicuously absent.
Frowning with confusion, Cleo reached for her phone and dialed Jay's number, but to no avail. The phone rang out, unanswered, leaving Cleo even more perplexed.
Cleo: "Hmm, that's strange. Jay's usually here by now. I wonder where he could be..."
With a shrug, Cleo decided to take matters into her own hands. She retrieved the spare key from its hiding spot and unlocked the door, pushing it open with a sense of trepidation.
The shop was bathed in the soft glow of dawn, the familiar scent of freshly brewed coffee lingering in the air. Cleo stepped inside, her footsteps echoing in the stillness of the empty shop.
Cleo: "Jay? Are you here?"
Her voice echoed off the walls, but there was no response. Cleo's brow furrowed with concern as she made her way to the back office, her mind racing with worry.
As she entered the office, Cleo's heart sank at the sight before her. The room was in disarray, papers strewn across the desk and chairs overturned. It was as if a storm had passed through, leaving chaos in its wake.
Cleo: "What in the world... Jay, where are you?"
Her voice trembled with concern as she scanned the room for any sign of her friend. But there was no trace of Jay, only the lingering sense of unease that seemed to hang in the air like a heavy fog.
With a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach, Cleo realized that something was seriously wrong. Jay was missing, and she had no idea where to start looking.
As Cleo pondered the unsettling scene before her, the jingle of the shop's bell announced the arrival of a customer. Startled, she turned to see Vera, the woman whose eerie smile had haunted Jay just the night before, striding confidently into the shop.
Cleo, forcing a smile to mask her unease, greeted Vera with an air of cheerfulness.
Cleo: "Good morning! Welcome to Eclipsed Brews. What can I get for you today?"
Vera's smile widened into a menacing grin as she approached the counter, her eyes gleaming with an unsettling intensity.
Vera: "Good morning, Cleo. I'll have my usual, please."
Cleo's heart raced with apprehension as she prepared Vera's order, her mind racing with questions about Jay's whereabouts. Despite her growing unease, she maintained a facade of composure as she served Vera her coffee.
Cleo: "Here you go, one extra hot latte, just the way you like it."
Vera accepted the cup with a nod of thanks, her gaze fixed on Cleo with a predatory gleam.
Vera: "Thank you, Cleo. By the way, have you seen Jay around this morning?"
Cleo's heart skipped a beat at the mention of Jay's name, her anxiety mounting with each passing moment.
Cleo: "No, I haven't. He's usually here by now, but I couldn't reach him on his phone either. Do you know where he might be?"
Vera's smile widened into a sinister grin, sending shivers down Cleo's spine.
Vera: "Oh, I wouldn't worry about Jay too much, Cleo. He's just taking a little... detour."
Cleo's blood ran cold at Vera's cryptic words, a sense of foreboding settling over her like a heavy cloak.
Cleo: "What do you mean, a detour? Where is he?"
But Vera merely shrugged, her smile as enigmatic as ever.
Vera: "You'll find out soon enough, Cleo. In the meantime, enjoy the quiet. It won't last for long."
With that ominous parting remark, Vera turned and sauntered out of the coffee shop, leaving Cleo alone with her mounting fear and unanswered questions.
As the hours passed and the morning rush subsided, the bell above the door chimed once again, signaling the arrival of familiar faces. Hanaki and Akira entered the shop, their presence bringing a sense of relief to Cleo amidst the lingering tension.
Cleo, her unease evident in her demeanor, forced a smile as she greeted them.
Cleo: "Hey, Hanaki, Akira. Good to see you both."
Hanaki, noticing Cleo's strained expression, furrowed his brow in concern.
Hanaki: "Is everything alright, Cleo? You seem a bit on edge."
Cleo hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal about her unsettling encounter with Vera earlier that morning.
Cleo: "It's nothing, really. Just a bit of a rough start to the day, that's all."
Akira, ever perceptive, sensed Cleo's unease and pressed for more information.
Akira: "Are you sure, Cleo? You seem really shaken up. Did something happen?"
Cleo glanced around the empty shop, debating whether to confide in her friends about Vera's cryptic warning. Ultimately, she decided to share her concerns with them, knowing that they deserved to know the truth.
Cleo: "Well, you see... I had a strange encounter with Vera earlier. She came in acting all mysterious and hinted that something was going on with Jay. I tried to ask her more about it, but she just left me with more questions than answers."
Hanaki and Akira exchanged concerned glances, their worry for Jay deepening with Cleo's revelation.
Hanaki: "That does sound odd. Do you think something happened to Jay?"
Akira, her mind racing with possibilities, voiced her own fears.
Akira: "I hope not, but we should definitely try to find out what's going on. Jay wouldn't just disappear without a reason."
As they pondered the mysterious circumstances surrounding Jay's absence, the weight of uncertainty hung heavy in the air. Little did they know, their search for answers would lead them down a path fraught with danger and deception, as they delved deeper into the shadows that lurked beneath the surface of their seemingly ordinary lives.
