Where It All Started

"Eat up, honey! I cooked all your favorite. " my mom said smiling at me.

" Oh, wow! Who can resist your waffles, bacon and scrambled eggs!  But Mom, alam mo naman na I'm on a diet. ' , reklamo ko.

" Hindi ka naman mataba. Medyo mabilog lang ng konti. Kain ka na para hindi ka mahuli sa school." sabi ni mom.

" Mom, meron Nutella? " i asked.

" Akala ko ba on a diet ka?" natatawang sabi ni Mom.

" Fine, fine. Wait, andyan na ata si Lana", nagmadali akong tumayo at sumilip sa bintana.

Bumaba ng kotse si Lana, my best friend since kindergarten, at pumasok  sa bahay namin.

" Wow, ang sarap naman nyan. Can I have some Tita Kim?"  Lana asked.

" Oo, naman. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." sabi ni Mom.

" By the way, Tita, we're having a party sa bahay tonight. Birthday ni kuya. Can Dria come? Ihahatid ko din po sya or pwede din po ba sya mag sleepover?" tanong ni Lana with matching puppy eyes.

" Gusto mo ba anak umattend at mag sleepover kila Lana?" my mom asked. She knows me too well. Alam nya na I'd rather stay at home, chill, listen to music and read books.

I was about to decline and Lana made a paawa look.

" Sige na naman Dria. Ngayon lang ako nag request sayo. We are in our last year in college. We'll go separate ways. Alam mo naman na gusto nila Dad na mag MBA ako sa US. Hindi ka naman sumasama sa parties. Live a little! " Lana dramatically said.

Natatawa ang mom ko. Sabay sabi na
" Dria, pagbigyan mo na ang kaibigan mo. Totoo naman lahat ng sinabi nya. Try mo din anak umattend ng party. Have some fun, anak! "

Wala akong nagawa kung hindi pumayag. Pinagtulungan na ako ng dalawa.
Lana triumphantly exclaimed " Yes!!"
Bumili na ako last week pa, " she said with a wink.

"Come on, pack your overnight bag. We'll go straight to my house after class. "

" Mom, solo ka tonight. Paano yan?, nag aalala kong sabi.
My mom is a solo parent. My dad was out of the scene even before I was born kaya kami lang dalawa. She has no siblings and  her parents are based in Australia. My mom is a writer by profession and she opted to stay here in the Philippines kahit kami lang dalawa.

" Ano ka ba Dria, I can manage. I raised you single handedly nga di ba. Don't worry about me. Have fun! " angal ni Mom. Go, anak! Carpe diem!, hirit ni Mom.

" You're the best and i love you mom!"  And I hugged her.

" Lana, ikaw na bahala kay Dria ha. Walang alam yan sa ganyan."

" Oo, naman Tita Kim.  You know that she's like a sister to me."

"Bye, mom!" I said before i rode Lana's car.

Pagdating sa school, Lana parked her car sa reserved spot nya. Yes, her family is filthy rich. She's also the queen bee in campus. We are complete opposites and everyone is wondering why we're the best of friends. Ewan ko nga din ba pero when we met way back in kindergarten, hindi na kami naghiwalay. I can read what's going on in her mind at ganon din sya sakin.

We entered the campus and ang daming bumabati. kasama ko ba naman si Miss Congeniality.
Lana is taking up Business Management and ako ay Accountancy. Same building lang kami. Since I graduated as a Valedictorian in highschool, nakakuha ako ng scholarship sa prestigious university na pinapasukan namin ngayon. I like simple and uncomplicated things. I don't want extra attention. Although I'm part  of the student council, i still try to stay low key.

" See you in a few hours, Dria! " sigaw ni Lana. I just waved back and hurriedly go to the opposite direction.
