The city was buzzing with life. A colourful cascade of neon lights and holograms as well as many different advertisements all mixed and packed tightly together between tall skyscrapers, limiting the view of the night sky of Nexus Arcadia. The cold steel and concrete contrasted vibrant blues, reds and pinks of many lights which the people and megacorporations installed. The megalopolis suffocated not only the natural, but also the artificial. It was hard to find any natural greenery. There were a few parks scattered around, but because of the amount of people trying to break free from the blinding lights and noises of the industrial, that they became ruined. Among those bleak greyscale buildings and colourful vendors, under the neons and between tight alleys everyone wanted to carve a space for themselves in this urban jungle.

In this labyrinth of glass, steel and rubbish most people lost themselves. They forgot what is right, what is wrong. That wasn't important to them. What was important, was buying, working, entertainment. Many lost sleep just to keep doing those things. Due to all that, there was a large criminal underbelly. Many gangs, mafias and syndicates terrorized the streets and alleys of lower and darker parts of Nexus Arcadia.

Yet, high above those alleys large corporations, firms, and companies flourish, not realising in what world they are, or maybe they are just blinded by money enough to simply not care. Gone are the days of charities and campaigns to protect the environment. In place of forests, now stand giant warehouses.

In the centre of it all there was a student of bioengineering, Eden Blake. Now on a maglev monorail, he was getting back from his classes to the small, cramped room in his dorm. As the train got closer and closer to his station, more and more bright lights flashed before his eyes. The quiet humming of the train was a blessing in a noisy, loud city. A moment of peace for those in the metal tube.

In this tranquil setting Eden could rest. His thoughts could collect into one and his brain could process all the information his professors conveyed. Eight hours of gene splicing, robotics, neural augmentation, countless theories... He tried to dissect, turn everything into lesser chunks, so he could better understand, but it was too much. Eden tried remembering what the teacher has said, but it was no use. His brain was overloaded both with today's classes and the lights. He opened his backpack and took out his notebooks. He looked at the timetable. Just one more station till he was near his dorm. Fifteen minutes wasn't enough to revise everything but Eden still tried.

As the monorail came to a halt, Eden put his notebook back into the backpack, put it on and got up. He waited a couple seconds for the machine to stop. Once the doors opened, the noise and stench of the city sprawled into the maglev. Eden walked into the crowd. He squeezed through as fast as possible to reach his dorm. Unfortunately, it was quite a long way from the station. In the tight alleys some vendors set up their stands, selling goods and competing with vending machines. Eden bought some noodles from one of the vendors. He needed to walk up some stairs, then ride an elevator to reach a higher level of the city. Finally, he walked a tight street as a shortcut to get to his dorm.

Eden walked over to the door. He pulled out his access card and swiped it. Something clicked and the card reader beeped. Eden was finally home.

He went inside the room, dropped the backpack next to the door, and headed to his bed, which doubled as a couch. It was the centre of his room. He ate, slept, rested, studied, he did everything that could be done on that piece of furniture. Adjacent to the bed, a compact kitchenette stood ready to provide sustenance. A microwave hummed softly, the small oven bore the scars of numerous reheated meals, and the sink held traces of dishes yet to be cleaned. Cabinets adorned the walls, their doors hiding an array of instant meals and food packets—an inevitable compromise between convenience and culinary artistry. In front of the bed there was a TV. Although Eden was annoyed with the screens, he had more than necessary. The same could be said about cables and wires. Adding a touch of life to the room, several potted plants adorned the shelves and surfaces. These splashes of green brought a hint of nature to Eden's otherwise technological sanctuary, offering a visual reprieve from the cold, calculated lines of the urban jungle. Lastly, there was one large window in the entire apartment. The view from it wasn't pretty. A lot of walls, graffiti, neon lights and holograms and even more ads.
