Waiting thirty minutes for one iced coffee wasn't the way Maya hoped to spend her afternoon, especially when she had to meet her parents and go on a blind date right after.
She did everything she could to pass the time and to attempt to be patient, she checked her hate comments, she texted a few of her friends, and she even scrolled through TikTok, but eventually she couldn't take it anymore.
She walked up to the counter, belongings in hand, heels making a loud click on the slick floors as she took small steps, knowing she wasn't used to walking in the taller __ than average__ shoes. She was ready to ask where her coffee was, when someone else beat her to it.
"I'm sorry. I know it's busy, but I've been waiting for a while and I really have to go soon, I was wondering if my drink was almost done or if I could have a refund?" A curly haired boy asked with a deep voice and she could've sworn she had seen him before, but she couldn't recall exactly who he was.
"Sorry we can't give you a refund. We'll be done in a few minutes." The barista told him, her bright pins on her apron standing out to Maya. She noticed small things, and pins like that reminded her of the pins she collected in middle school.
"Please I really have to go too. I've been waiting for thirty minutes." Maya chimed in, anxiously.
"Names?" The barista just looked tired, expecting them to have just ordered.
"Sarah." She gave her fake name.
"Mason." The guy, who didn't look like a Mason said.
"Right... looks like you two already got your drinks." She looked back up at them once she checked on the drinks.
"That's impossible, I've been sitting over there just waiting." Maya pointed at the now empty chair she was sitting at just moments before.
"Sorry we can make both of your drinks in a few minutes, but we can't give them to you for free because you already got them."
"But we didn't get them." Maya said, already stressed out from something much bigger than coffee, her love life.
"It says that you both did. I really can't do anything about that. But you can buy them again."
"Great. So someone's stolen our drinks but there's nothing we can do about it." Maya put on a fake smile, this was just her luck.
The barista was silent, she just nodded.
"Okay, you know what I'll get both of them." The guy pulled his wallet out of his pocket, after taking a minute to think about the situation.
"Wait no." Maya said, not wanting this guy to pay for three coffees now.
"It's okay, I'll get your drink. Don't even worry about it."
"No, no you don't have to do that."
"I insist."
"Okay." She agreed after even more talking to. "Thank you so much." She smiled, a guy, or much less, a stranger had never paid for her coffee before.
They both watched their coffees get made side by side, to prevent anyone from walking off with them. Neither one of them spoke, they just waited. But it wasn't like an uncomfortable silence, she liked the guys presence.
