"Hey Jes? Can I ask you something?" Billie asked as she followed Jesse's expression softened, and he took a step closer to her. Jesse into their kitchen. She took a seat at the island and watched as he busied himself with making something for his daughter. "D-do you remember when you lov-" I got cut off by the doorbell ringing. Jesse sighed and set down the spatula. "I guess that'll be the UPS guy with the new dishwasher," he muttered, walking toward the door.
Billie flashed a smile at him and took Mila, who she kept entertained with my hair.
She heard Jesse say, "Speak of the devil," making her stand up and head towards him. Billie's eyes widened with fear as she held Mila closer, stroking the toddler's ginger hazel hair.
It was Matthew, standing at the door with a smug smile on his face. "Well, well, if it isn't the little homewrecker," he sneered, stepping forward. He had a bandage on his head, right at the spot where Jesse had smacked him.
"Billie go inside." Jesse said, his tone laced with warning. "I'll handle this." Billie hesitated, glancing between Jesse and Matthew before reluctantly leading Mila back inside the house. As she disappeared from view, Jesse turned his attention back to Matthew. "You really shouldn't have come here, Matt. You know she's off limits."
"Billie don't listen to him. You know better than leaving me baby!" Matthew shouted at the top of his lungs, his face twisted into an angry grimace. "She's mine, Jesse! Mine! I should have never let her go!"
"She belongs to no one Matthew. Not even you. She's a grown woman, and she makes her own choices." Jesse's tone was calm, but firm. "And I think it's best if you leave her out of your games. You know what you did to her, and you should be thankful that I'm not pressing charges. Now get the fucking hell out!" Jesse spat.
Matthew's hands were curled up into fists, about to punch Jesse, when Billie came, "That's enough! I'll come with you alright? I'll come later. Just leave us alone."
"You're only making my life miserable. I fucking hate you!" Billie yelled.
"Yeah all of these excuses because you're cheating on me with him. Whatever bitch. You don't want me? Then don't come back crawling like dog you bloody slut!" Matthew snarled, turning away from them and stalking back to his car. He climbed in, slamming the door and peeling out of the driveway.
Jesse slammed the door behind him, all his attention turned to Billie. His eyes flashed with a mixture of anger and hurt. "Why did you do that?" he demanded. "What?"
"You fucking said you'd go later. Why?"
Billie broke down in tears and Jesse wrapped his arms around her, holding her tightly. "I'm sorry, I just wanted it to be over," she sobbed. "I can't take it anymore. He's been such a jerk."
"He's always been a jerk. You'd find someone better than him Billie. You don't need him no more." Jesse tried to soothe her, rubbing her back.
"No Jesse! You were the best I had. You were everything and I needed nothing else. But then you met her. I saw the way you looked at her. And I was just...I was just stupid. I should've never given you the chance to go with her. I should've never..." Her voice trailed off, and he could feel her shoulders shake with her sobs. He held her tighter, rocking her gently back and forth.
He then lifted her face, cupping it in his hands and smiled warmly at her. "Billie, you were the best I had too, but time passes and everyone changes. Nothing remains the same darling." His lips pressed a gentle kiss on her forehead.
"I swear upon my life that you'd find someone way better than me. We broke up and it's not 'cause our love wasn't strong or true, it's just...life, you know? Things change, people change. But I'll always cherish the time we had. You're the only one who ever understood me, and I'll never forget that. As for her, she's nothing but a passing fancy. Something pretty to look at, but not nearly as beautiful as you." He leaned in, cupping her face with one hand and brushing away a stray tear with his thumb. "You deserve the world, Billie. You deserve so much more than him, and you deserve so much more than me. I hope one day you find it, but until then, just remember that you'll always be my friend. My best friend."
She couldn't bring herself to believe him as much as she wanted to. She just fucking couldn't.
How could she forget? How could she let go? Let go of what the relationship they used share.
But all she did was nod and hid her true feelings. Pretended like she was over him and hid all her pain and sorrows.
"C'mon let's go inside. Mila must be hungry." He said, taking her hand as she cradled Mila in her arms. He walked with her back into the house, leading her to the living room where they could sit and talk. As they settled down on the comfortable couch, he glanced over at her and smiled reassuringly. "You can tell me anything, you know that. I'm here for you, no matter what."
I nodded and we all ate some sandwiches in silence, 'till Mila broke it with her cute babbles and giggles. I smiled at her and at Jesse as he tickled her tiny little belly. He was such a natural father. The silence was only broken by their laughter and Mila's cute noises. It was strange, but it felt. . . right. Like everything was where it was supposed to be.
"Hey you want anything?" He offered, getting up from the couch. "I'm good, thanks." She replied, shaking her head. Mila crawled over to Billie, clutching at her shirt. "She's just playing with me." Billie laughed, scratching the little girl's back. "You're a good girl, aren't you?" Mila let out a happy giggle and buried her face into Billie's chest.
She smiled and pointed at the TV, where a cartoon was playing. "Watch." She said, her little voice cute and clear. Mila seemed interested and crawled over to Jesse, who lifted her up and sat her on his lap. She giggled as she watched the show, completely entranced. Billie smiled and leaned her head on Jesse's shoulder. It was almost like they were a real family.

He came back with a glass of water, handing it over to Billie.
"How are you so good with her?" He asked, his voice admiring as he watched Billie play with Mila, who was sitting on her lap. Billie was making funny faces and noises, making the little girl laugh as she continued watching TV. She grabbed Billie's hair and put it in her mouth, making her giggle even more.
"What do you mean?" Billie asked, looking at him. He smiled and shrugged, "Well, Gab doesn't really gives Mila much attention or anything. So it's mostly me, pampering her and everything. I guess I just...clicked with her, you know? She's such a sweetheart, it's impossible not to love her."
They watched Mila for a while longer, enjoying the way she laughed and played with them. It was a nice change of pace from the usual arguments and tension that seemed to fill the room up.
"Oh I mean Gab, is her real mother, Jesse. I'm sure she wouldn't despise her own daughter." As much as Billie hates Gab, she still defended her just because she doesn't want to hurt Jesse. He deserves to be happy with someone he'll truly be happy with and spend his whole entire life with.
"I know. But there's a huge difference between the way you treat Mila and the way she does." He said, his voice sincere and looked at Billie with gratitude and affection.
He appreciates her for being there for him and Mila, despite all those drama. He cares for her as a friend and that's all it might ever be.
"Baby fever." Billie joked, ruffling Mila's hair. "You should give Gab some time. Maybe she'll find her groove eventually. It's not like she doesn't love Mila or anything." She shrugged, handing the little girl back to Jesse. Mila snuggled into his chest, already beginning to doze off. Jesse smiled down at her, his eyes meeting Billie's. There was something there, an understanding, a connection that went beyond friendship.
His tattoos were clearly making her wet as fuck. She could feel the wetness seeping through her underwear.
