Sneak Peak. The second book in the series will be out soon.

"The cunning of a fox can be just as deadly as the violence of a wolf" --- Thomas Paine.

She was hard to find and even harder to kill. I was surprised to learn she was human. Living in the city, pretending to be like the rest of them. When they sat beside her, I wondered if they knew they were sitting beside the worst of the worst.

The city was atrocious, and the smells were horrific. How humans live this way is beyond me. My fox has buried herself deep down, not wanting anything to do with this place. I don't blame her. I wish I could leave, too.

I followed her for days, and finding a way to end her without being seen in the city was my greatest obstacle. Humans are everywhere, watching with their cameras.

My best chance was catching her on her morning run through the park. Seeing a fox in the city park will be unusual but believable. Lady mauled by a rabid fox. Sounds nice. And most importantly, believable.

The day is here, and I stalk my prey, waiting for the perfect timing. There is a light dusting of snow already covering the ground. More snow flurries began to fall, and they swirled around my paws. I want to run and play, roll around in the snow. Maybe after I kill this bitch.

The smell of perfume alerts me she is near. Who wears perfume while they run? That alone is enough of a reason to rip her throat out. She made millions working with the shifters and luring the unloved and neglected children into the lion's den. Heartless to betray the most vulnerable of your own. She wasn't there the night my parents were murdered, but she played a hand in their demise.

I slither my way around the trees like a snake. I bared my fangs in a crooked smile before I attacked. There were screams as I bit her neck and clawed her face. I had to make sure she would bleed out before help came. So I craved a hole in her throat clean to the other side. No way she would survive. Once satisfied with my kill, I dash off, leaving as many false trails as possible. When I reached the sewer tunnel where I left my clothes, I shifted back and dressed quickly. I couldn't leave this city fast enough.

Only two more to go, and I have a good lead on Mr. Price. It seems he is having a wedding for his oldest son. The wedding is taking place on the full moon per wolf shifter tradition. I am a pretty willy fox, but pulling that off will be challenging.

I wish I could talk to Uncle Jasper and get his advice, but I am too much of a coward to face him. I spend my free time thinking about the ones I left behind. I hope they can come to understand and someday forgive me.

Riven's POV

My whole body shakes as I clench the note in my fist. My wolf tries to force the shift and go after our mate. I manage to keep control for now, but I don't know how much longer it can last. I sit on her bed and smooth out the note. Rereading it for the hundredth time.

Riven,

I know you will be angry at my decision, but it had to be done. I needed to leave in order to keep the promise I made to myself and my parents. Know that I never intended to hurt you. Any of you. What I am about to ask will be rubbing salt into an open wound. Look out for Owen. Without me there to protect him, the wolves will target him. I know it's a lot to ask, but I am asking anyway.

Payton

My mate left in the middle of the night and asked me to look after her boyfriend, the omega. I haven't seen him since he left for break. Is he back, and does he know Payton isn't? She is right. The other wolves will rip him apart now that she isn't here. She had to know what awaited him when she left. Just like she knows I will protect him for her.
