Chapter 8

I bowed and gave Ken a thump so that he would do the same and the others would imitate me. If we were in the Middle Ages, this was the proper greeting?

- Pleased to meet you," I finally said when I managed to open my mouth.

- We didn't come here on purpose," Ken added in a panic, "we got lost.

The King quickly judged us all with his eyes.

- There's nothing to apologize for and you can raise your heads.

Behind him, the Queen motioned to her valet to withdraw.

- We're handling the situation, Vistus, you don't have to worry.

The valet bowed to leave.

- As you wish, Your Majesty.

- I can't believe we speak the same language as them," Ken whispered in my ear. That's just great.

- Shut up," I simply replied.

The King was a tall man with a strong build, he had short brown hair and brown eyes, his glare was bright green. As for the Queen, she had long, straight black hair and blue eyes. She wore a rather imposing golden glow.

The King didn't seem very comfortable to see us here.

- I told you I'd had a sign announcing the arrival of our descendants Jean," said the Queen with a big smile.

- I confess I could hardly believe it until now," he muttered under his breath.

- Sit down at the table," said the Queen cheerfully, "it'll be more convivial for a chat. And I don't think you're here by chance.

- Indeed," said Lia with a lump in her throat. It's very important.

We sat down around the big table so that I found myself opposite the Queen. We quickly introduced ourselves and explained the reason that had brought us here.

- I see," said the septic King, "so you'd like us to recite the formula for suppressing magic in its entirety.

He didn't look too thrilled.

- If we don't do this," I said, "Nekrós will decimate the whole Family and he'll have the whole world's magic in his possession. If that happens, it's only a matter of time before he turns the world we know into a battlefield.

- I think you're right," replied the Queen, "we've had magic for far too long, and it's not a gift that can be entrusted to humans. We also need to explain everything you don't know about the origin of our powers.

The King cleared his throat to speak.

- Our powers didn't appear by chance," he began. In the beginning, they were entrenched in what is known as Pandora's Box.

- Then it's not a myth?

- No," said the Queen, "unfortunately, it's true. The former King, my father, wanted to find it in order to save our lands, which were going through a difficult period. However, when he discovered and opened the box, he discovered a magic that was far too powerful, and ended up consuming him from within. The main essence of our power is partly due to the infinite amount of hope that was contained in the box. At that time, there were currently three people with powers that I knew of, Jean and I and a friend.

- When we got together, Shadow received a sign from the clouds and they guided us on our adventure to help us bring down the evil magic that was contaminating the entire kingdom because of the King. Eventually, we succeeded in enclosing his demonic power in the box, then destroyed it. We thought that by doing so, it would be exterminated forever, but given your history this so-called Nekrós was possessed by this dangerous power. He certainly wasn't originally like this, but evil has taken hold of him and changed him completely.

- Well, it's not just that," continued the Queen, "I don't think our descendants can carry this kind of magic inside them.

- And yet they do, Ken informed her.

The Queen shook her head.

- Not if we take into account the fact that there are not one but two lines in The Family. Our friend left a long time ago and we'll probably never see him again. But he was confronted with this terrible magic for a large part of his life, and it's hardly surprising that he still retains some of it in his genes. If he also started a family and that family met our family, the secret of the two bloodlines must surely have been hidden.

- I find all this hard to believe," Matt muttered. It's too many revelations all at once. I just have one question: can you reassure me that we're part of your descendants?

- I honestly don't know," said the Queen, "but don't worry about that right now, we've got other things to see.

- Let's go outside," said the King, "it'll be easier to start the ritual.
