A giant yellow pencil slammed over a red button that buzzed. A woman's voice sounded through the intercom.
"Gloria, I need Jacqueline Bouvier on the line," Bobby ordered.
He cleared his desk with nothing but a black telephone. He looked pensively over his desk after grabbing the phone.
"Yes, hello Mr. Attorney General?" A soft womanly voice greeted from the other line.
Bobby let a moment of silence pass before he spoke. "Please, it's Bobby. How are you Jackie?"
Jackie, receiving the call from Georgetown, relaxed on her couch but still wondered what the Attorney General could have possibly wanted.
"I'm well. May I ask what this call is about?"
"Well, I hear you've been making strides with my brother the President," Bobby started and then waited. He could hear her warm smile. "You've certainly made an impression if I know about it. And I'm not calling on his behalf. Rather, there is another matter that I am involved with that I would like to talk about with you today."
Bobby toyed with the phone chord as he spoke. His thoughts were building with every moment.
"As you probably know my office works closely with the FBI. Well I've been briefed on the mission you are undertaking. I would like to discuss what this means with seeing my brother."
Jackie nodded as though she were right in Bobby's office. Then she remembered what the agents had told her in the car.
"Oh Bobby, they want me to go with him. Go with him until he gives details about what he will do to Jack. Just how will I do that? What about Jack? Does my heart mean anything to you men in suits?"
"I appreciate the work you're doing to protect the family," Robert Kennedy said. "Yet I believe you're mad. A crazy woman. To see Jack and be apart of this. Do you not see the harm?"
Jackie wanted to scream, but she held it back. Who would be her saving anchor through all of this?
"They only know me as Monica and never Jackie."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. I even wear a blonde wig like I'm Marilyn Monroe."
"You go with him until the operation is done," Bobby nestled the phone with his shoulder. "Let Jack run after you."
"I'll do anything to protect Jack. Even see this maniac." She sighed. "It's not my fault Jack wanted me at the party and that I'm in love with him."
"In love. That's right. You're in love with him." Bobby chuckled. "Almost a decade apart. There's that heart."
"I'm so sorry, Bobby. I've ruined it haven't I? I don't have to see him ever again." She grabbed a handkerchief. "Only catch the men who want to take him from me if it's the last thing I do."
"Oh darling, don't get like that. You've caught the ball now give us a home run. Never forget to run home even when you're with him, my brother Jack."
