There was nothing wrong with the hotel.
It was a fine hotel. Perfectly functional hotel, no monsters, or broken window locks, or creepy murder hallways.
It was just.
Well.
It was just that there was only one bed.
It was just that when the attendant at the front desk said that there was only one room available, and failed to elaborate on the details, Percy hadn’t imagined that meant one queen sized bed smack dab in the middle of the wall surrounded by nothing but two night stands and a little armchair.
He and Jason turned to face each other at the same time.
“I can sleep on the floor,” Jason said right when Percy said “Guess we’ll have to share.” (He’d shared with Grover enough times in Yancy to be used to it.)
“Seriously?” Percy said, giving Jason a look that more or less said ‘Are you kidding me right now?’
“Oh, well, it’s just that—I mean I wouldn’t—We’re just…” He trailed off, unable to defend himself for whatever reason.
“Look if you don’t want to—”
“No! We can share—”
“Do you or do you not want to share?”
“I don’t know!” Jason’s face was slightly more red than it had been approximately forty-five seconds ago.
“Okay,” said Percy, finally taking a full step into the room and tossing his duffel bag on the ground. “We’re sharing, and I’m taking the bathroom first.” And with that he was out of sight and closing the bathroom door.
Jason—with a little less force than Percy—tossed his duffel bag onto the bed and rifled through it.
When Percy emerged some time later, damp and with only a towel on, Jason nearly scoffed.
“What? It’s not like this is gonna go like some middle school girl’s fanfiction, I need to grab my pajamas, and then I’ll go right back into the bathroom to change. Jeez.” The eye roll that punctuated his sentence was a little dramatic, Jason thought.
He did, in fact, just grab his pajamas and retreat back into the bathroom.
By the time he left the bathroom for the final time (fully clothed and smelling a little nicer), Jason was already in bed, a pillow wall carefully constructed down the middle. Percy stared at him.
“What?!”
“Take down the pillow wall, Jason,” Percy said.
“Why?”
“Dude.”
Jason took down the pillow wall.
Percy climbed into bed, threw the blankets over top himself, and with record breaking speed, fell asleep.
Jason had no such luxury.
He wasn’t used to sleeping in a bed with another person, and everything felt simultaneously too warm and too cold.
And it was awkward.
Gods, it was really awkward.
It took close to two hours of forcing his eyes shut and deep breathing, but he did eventually fall asleep.
When they woke up, they were tangled together, because of course they were. Jason was the first to open his eyes, to find Percy’s head on his chest and his arm thrown over his middle. Jason seemed to have wrapped his own arm around Percy’s shoulders.
Percy slowly blinked his eyes open, and upon processing what was going on, immediately closed his eyes again and attempted to go back to sleep.
He would’ve succeeded too, if it weren’t for the immediate pounding on the door and the sound of a lock clicking.
Jason immediately jumped out of the bed, face so red it looked like it could start smoking at any second.
In walked Piper and Annabeth (who had gotten to the hotel around an hour before Percy and Jason had).
Piper started laughing.
“How’d you get that open?” Asked a still delirious Percy.
“Wouldn’t you like to know,” Piper said, still laughing.
“Up and at ‘em, seaweed brain, we’ve gotta get moving,” Annabeth said, tugging at Percy’s arm.
“Gimme a minute,” Percy murmured, unsuccessfully trying to rub at his eyes while Annabeth forced him up.
Jason was already shoving their things into duffel bags, deciding that what belonged to who didn’t matter in that moment.
Percy managed to tug his shoes on when Jason shoved his duffel bag into his arms, and hurried out the door.
