Chapter 2: Soulmates

Anahita's POV:

(Still at the exit of the training grounds)

"You grew up so fast and tomorrow you will already be 18. Where did my little girl go?" My father looked at me with adoration in his eyes and patted my head softly.

"I can't wait for it ! I'll finally be able to enter the competition; I'm so exited !"

"You're that impatient ugh? " asked my father, chuckling.

"Yeah !"

"Haha, Even if you can go to the competition, you don't stand a chance against me" I suddenly heard a voice behind me, a quite annoying voice by the way. I don't need to turn around to know that it's my annoying sister, but I still decided to turn around and face her.

"What do you want Kali?"

"Hello to you too little sis" remarked my sister while grinning.

"Mph as if you were better" I mumbled.

"Aww don't pout Anah, it just makes me want to annoy you more"

"Urgh I swear I will beat you this year. Prepare yourself! Because tomorrow I will finally receive the rest of my gifts and I will beat you flat out, you can be sure!"

"We'll see liltle sis, we'll see"

"Hahaha still so competitive ugh? I wonder from whom you inherited that. " asked my father.

"In your idea darling? She definitely didn't get that from me"

"Tanfana!" My father ran to my mother and gave her the biggest hug ever.

"When did you arrive?"

"Just now" giggled gracefully my mother.

"I missed you"

"Aww I missed you too darling"

"But I thought I wouldn't see you until tonight, didn't you have a lot of visits to do?"

My father speaks about the visit my mother must do regularly to every families. She do that to be sure that they miss nothing and have everything needed for at least a month, since it's the responsibility of the clan chief's soulmate to do so.

"Yes I should normally still be visiting families at this hour, but I just finished my last visit for today, so I thought I'd pay my dear husband a visit too. Why? You aren't happy to see me?"

"Of course I'm happy, this day couldn't get better! Oh, you still don't know! Our little girl beated Geith in a sword fight today"

"Oh Really? I'm so proud of you Anah; you did it!"

"Hehe I wish you could see the face the old man made, it was hilarious. He looked like a fish, closing and opening its mouth in shock." My family and I laughed at the thought while my teacher grumbled beside us.

"Now, to a more serious matter. We should hurry darling; we have a lot to prepare for tomorrow"

"Lead the way my dear; I'll follow you" said my father, leaving with my mother.

I always loved the connection between them; they still showed their love for each other after all these years as if it were the first day.
I kind of envy that.
My mother is the sweetest ever. She and my father are soulmates and they really complete each other.

While my father is on the rough side, my mother is more delicate and gentle. He is the muscles and she is the brain. They are what we call "True Soulmates".

In our clan, we believe that each person as someone meant for them, and they recognize that person at first sight.
Earthia is the one who decides who is meant to be with whom, and we can only wait until we turn 18 to discover who it is. I'm so exited to meet mine!!

But sometimes, it happens that some people in our clan never find their soulmate and end their lives alone.
I know it's sad, but there is an explanation for that.

When the humans invaded Stonhmir our people were massacred because we were perceived as threats; they made no difference between a child, a woman or a man. For them, the mere fact of belonging to another "race" was a sufficient reason to invade our land and kill us mercilessly.
They were far superior in number and took advantage of that.

I will never forgive them.

Originally, we were all humans. We all share the same blood but the only difference is that our people were blessed and received extraordinary gifts.

They are cruel and heartless and it's for this reason that we are today, 300 years later, still hidden in the heart of the dense sacred forest of Earthia, living in harmony with nature.

The best part is that we can't hide among humans, because the difference between us is too great. We are naturally taller, stronger and more imposing than them; they would notice us right away.

Another effect of Earthia's blessing, I guess.

But the problem is that even if the people of our clan mainly find their soulmates among us, there are still some exceptions, and we can only guess that these people are destined to be with someone outside our lands, beyond the forest. A human.

You can now guess why these people end their lives alone. Because finding their soul mates would expose us, and exposing us would be the downfall of us all.
But even if they never find their true soulmates, they can find love among themselves. Even if it's rare.

After my parents left, my sister, my teacher and I separated: they went I-don't-know-where and I went back to my room to get the last preparations ready for my big day.

That night I decided to go to sleep early so that tomorrow will come faster.

I can't wait!
