Katherine stood at the entrance to the Yancy academy school clutching the letter Chiron had sent her so tight she was sure some of her blood would be left on the paper for the headmaster to find. She couldn't understand why she was so scared, I mean she had never been to a school before but how hard could it be? Classes, bullies, grades and sleeping, it seemed easy, right?
"Excuse me?" Katherine whipped around at the sound of a high-pitched voice. Met with a short, curly red haired girl with a mean expression Katherine almost became giddy at the sight of her first bully. Well, not her first bully, but her first kid bully.
"Um, Hi?" Katherine practically cringed at the sound of her own voice. Partially broken from all of the screaming she had done at capture the flag a few days prior.
"Are you planning on standing out here all day or are you going to go inside?" The girl stands before Katherine with a hand on her hip and all the sass in the world. Katherine could almost laugh, nothing scared her anymore or at least that's what she liked to tell herself.
"I'm new. Do you have any idea where the headmaster's office is?" Kat clears her throat, her voice still hoarse as the curly-haired girl continues to eye her suspiciously.
"Yes. Inside the doors if you take a left at the first hallway it should say: "Main office" and you'll find him in there," She smiles but Katherine can tell it's laced with poison, yet she still smiles back at her.
"Thanks, guess I'll be seeing you around,"
If only Katherine knew how much she would be seeing that curly-haired redhead, she never would have smiled back or even asked for directions to the main office. And she surely never would have showed up at Yancy academy to answer Chiron's letter.

Nancy walked past, her backpack smashing into the side of Kat's head and the glasses on her face beg her to pull them off, but she ignores it. Her eyes wander across the cafeteria and fall onto Percy Jackson who sits with Grover. She can't help but wish she had never even showed up here at Yancy. Chiron didn't really need her there, she was merely a precaution in case Percy decided to go rogue and needed a good hit upside the head. That's what Katherine was really here for, not the fun part, but the bodyguard part.
The bell rang shortly and Katherine stood up following the crowd of students until she could slip inside of Chiron's classroom and find her desk at the back of the room. Except today was different. Today was field trip day. So instead Katherine made her way towards the east exit and pushed her way outside. Sitting on the steps immersed in her thoughts Katherine couldn't help but think about Luke and how much she missed him. Since the day she had first met him they had been almost inseparable, everyone noticed, especially Chiron. She pictured him running through camp, the Stoll twins hot on his heels with blue hair. Katherine couldn't help but chuckle to herself at the prank they had pulled on Connor and Travis, they had been so mad at them they pushed both Katharine's and Luke's dinners into the fire leaving them nothing to eat for that night.
"Lost in thought?" Katherine whipped around to be met with Chiron, waiting at the top of the handicap rail. She smiled at the old man, sitting probably uncomfortably in his wheelchair with an expression only someone who knows about life can wear.
"Just bored," He smiled sadly at her, before wheeling down the ramp and stopping short in front of the stairs where she sat.
"Your time will come, Katharine. You know that, yes?" She couldn't help but smile at Chiron. He had been there for her in more ways than one after that day. The worst day of her life. He had been the dad she never had. After all this time it amazed her that he could still believe in her.
"Yeah, I know." He nodded before his eyes traveled up to the double doors and the sound of the class came pouring out onto the steps, making Kat stand.
"Alright, class. Is everyone ready to leave?" There was a monotone 'yes' that sounded through all thirty of these preteens but Kat remained quiet, sending one last look Chiron's way before returning to her job.
On the bus Kat had her nose tucked inside of her newest book, allowing her to escape the tortures of Nancy who right now was throwing bits of her peanut butter and ketchup sandwich at Kat. A piece landed on the page of her book and a rush of anger surged through Kat, her eyes went up and she looked across from her seat at Nancy who remained there, smiling innocently. Katherine tried to breathe, she really did, but it was too late and everything started to become a blur, like her father was taking over.
Katherine launched herself at Nancy, grabbing the picked apart sandwich out of her hand and shoving it into her mouth and forcing it closed. Nancy's eyes widened as she tried to look around and beckon for help but Katherine remained holding her mouth closed. Leaning in towards Nancy's red face and scared green eyes Katherine only muttered six words;
"Try that again, I dare you," Nancy shook her head violently and Kat finally let go, seeming to come out of her trance and falling back into her seat. Nancy shot up out of her seat spitting out the sandwich and running up towards the front of the bus. Kat shook with red hot anger and the fire in her eyes slowly cooled as she looked around the bus to find several fearsome eyes on her. She grabbed her book and backpack as the bus stopped and stood, hurrying off the bus and into the museum in the sea of preteens before Nancy could rat her out.
But she failed to see one other pair of eyes on her. Eyes that were fearsome, yes, but also intrigued. A pair of eyes that had wished to shove a sandwich down Nancy Bobofit's throat a million times before. Percy Jackson's eyes.
Inside the museum Kat kept her head low and to the back of the crowd of kids entering into every exhibit. Nancy had already told Mrs. Dodds everything and she sure was keeping an extra eye on Kat. Looking up for the first time she spotted Chiron talking to Percy and she decided to head off into another exhibit to get away from the cloud of regret the size of her father that loomed over her like a shadow. She couldn't believe she let herself get so angry, the last time that happened things didn't go well and she couldn't blow Grover and Chiron's cover so she decided to spend the rest of the day off in the back corner of the Greek heroes exhibit.
Pulling out her notebook she managed to scribble down some words about this burst of anger before the letters started to dance away and fall off the edge of the page. Slamming her book shut she closed her eyes tight and tried to breathe as her body shook with anger. Her father's voice echoed inside her head as she continued to shake. Stop, stop, stop. But her body wouldn't listen, there was no stopping this one, as she pulled her knees up to her chest a voice broke her out of her trance.
"Um, are you okay?" She looked up, her body still shaking slightly and was met with Percy Jackson's sea green eyes that were filled with concern.
"Yeah," Kat stood up abruptly causing Percy to stumble back but manage to catch himself on the statue of Achilles behind him.
"Are you sure?" His voice was slightly nervous and his eyes managed to look everywhere in the room but at her.
"I'm fine, Percy. Just... fine," His eyes dropped following her movements as she reached for her backpack and threw it over her shoulder.
"You know my name?" She closed her eyes and mentally cursed herself for allowing her anger and panic to get this far.
"Everyone knows your name," He frowned.
"Yeah, right. Everyone knows my name so they can attack me when I'm not looking," His voice was defeated as he scratched the back of his neck awkwardly, Kat continued to stare at the boy. She had never really seen him up close before, only watched him from afar like what seemed to be a creepy stalker, and much to her surprise and disdain, she couldn't help but think that he was cute, "By the way, I thought it was really cool, well, not cool but... Nancy deserved it, is what I'm trying to say, so. Don't let Mrs. Dodds give you a hard time. Everyone knows she's an asshole," Kat can't help but chuckle at the boy, standing before her and telling her it was cool to see her shove a sandwich down their bullies throat.
"Thanks, Percy. I'll keep that in mind," Almost on cue, Mrs. Dodds walked through the exhibit doors and made her way over to them, her eyes sharp and focused, but not on Katharine. Kat could almost feel the time slow down as she watched Mrs. Dodds arms transform into wings, growing long and scaly out of her back, before she could even think Alecto was running head first for Percy and Katherine was diving in front of him and saving his life.
