the masqueradeCONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, there was a time before charlize. B.C, if you will. it was a time when lando and charlize were just friends, yes, but it was a time that had built grace up into the very person she was today.
neatly woven in through the folds of the merino wool knitting lando and charlize together were lies. lies that were stitched so discreetly to hide the hem. lies that were hidden so thoroughly that charlize couldn't find them in plain sight.
grace made gentle work of teaching lando to sew each lie until it was well-hidden, and he never once had to unpick the seams to start over with new thread. not until grace's eighteenth birthday, but by then they had already run out of wool.
for what felt like forever, grace and lando had been best friends. what started out as doing homework together and sitting next to each other in class had blossomed into family holidays and teaching each other their hobbies. but as they got older, things took a turn through curiosity and intrigue, a new piece of fabric entering the mix; lace, and not the delicate kind.
it started off with grace getting teased by the rest of their friends because she was the only one in their group who hadn't had their first kiss yet at fourteen. it was something so simple, so small, but she hated being looked at as lesser than what she was because of something so stupid . . . and lando had stepped in. she'd been hurt at first thinking he'd had his first kiss without telling her, until he mentioned that he lied about having his so their friends wouldn't mock him.
lando had been grace's first kiss, and she had been his. they continued to be each others' firsts for everything up until they were seventeen . . . when lando started dating charlize. the secrets grace and lando held close to their hearts couldn't be destroyed, but they could be hidden deeper, buried in a coffin of mixed feelings and lost symphonies far from being recovered. so, instead, it had been a mutual understanding to forget the past. to forget every touch, every glance, every kiss, every— it was just better to leave it in the dark and far from charlize to ever find.
as much as grace had come to hate it, the night always became day. it was only ever a matter of time until the sun rose through the darkness, shading everything in shades of gold and tangerine. just as she had gotten accustomed to the storm clouds that covered every secret she ever held close to her heart, it had been brought to her attention that storms end. the sun always finds a way to shine through. the world brightened back up again the day after she turned eighteen, and, for once, grace had come to hate the warmth of the sun.
it was no secret that lando and charlize had a turbulent relationship, but neither of them could ever find a way to end it. it was jagged, rocky protruded glass shards from every angle, yet it remained perfectly intact in a bubble of toxic waste that grace had feared would tear them all apart. more so, she was worried for lando's career burning up into flames as he climbed the ladder of success to the heights of formula two.
